1923réf. 3210241Complete set of 48 cards 93 x 62 mm including 4 'Privilege Cards' marked with a star; folded sheet of rules; contained in the original purple card slipcase 98 x 76 x 25mm illustrated title label. A round game based on nonsense names of creatures probably the name The Great Galumphus derived from invention of the word 'galumph' by Lewis Carroll for Through the Looking Glass of 1872. Certainly all the other named creatures whose images decorate the cards are each in the same nonsense fashion and include the Crowned Cornubian Tasselled Snort Hound Bubbling Water-Hog Pushfoot Polliwog Climbing Chumtrunk Painted Pooh-Pooh Cissling Sand-Snapper Hairless Hunkum Flying Umbratunk Long Eared Scootler Scru-Wuzzium Lunar Lumpkin Putty Faced Popcat and Spotted Sniffle-Grub. This is a memory game where the players have to claim cards from their opponents after they have been turned over with a set of cards needed to become the winner. Jaques as a games maker had been established in 1795 however it was John Jaques II in the mid Victorian era who is credited with inventing such perennials as Happy Families Tiddledywinks Ludo and Snakes and Ladders where the company's fame was most in the ascendent. We have not been able to trace Miss Jessie Veal but wonder if she actually lived in some part of the far flung British Empire the animals and exotic scenery tend strongly to support this idea. 1419réf. 223794東京. Tokyo.: 実業之日本社. Jitsugyo no Nihonsha. Taisho 14 1925. Colour folding sugoroku game sheet 55 x 75.5 cm occasional browning visible on the reverse and a little on the margins but otherwise a very clean and good copy. The game follows a woman's life stages from her wedding to child birth as players progress each month from January to December. In addition daily and seasonal menus are included for each month. The breakfast and lunch menus given are in the main for Japanese dishes but occasionally western dishes such as croquettes and beef steaks appear for dinner. The beginning of the game is the woman's wedding in January. In March she is learning to cook. In April her husband helps cooking as she is suffering from morning sickness. The pregnancy progresses well and in December a baby boy arrives. The goal is a family tea party held in western style to welcome the baby. Both the husband and the wife are featured in illustrations and the companionship of marriage is emphasised as a source of family happiness. This colourful sugoroku game sheet was issued as a supplement to the January 1924 issue of Fujin Sekai Women's World. The magazine was founded in 1906 and was a very popular monthly magazine for women. . 実業之日本社. [Jitsugyo no Nihonsha]. unknown

1925pp. [vi], vii-xiv, 360. Index. Thirty-three pages of black and white photographic plates. Author headed British Columbia's Game department for thirteen years. "Everything that is stated in this narrative with regard to the habits of our wild life is, unless otherwise noted, first-hand knowledge that has been acquired from personal observation during over thirty-five years of wandering in the country. There are in every man of British blood traces of primitive man. They create an overpowering desire to hunt and kill. It is likely that there was more than the ordinary share in me. This is a hard country for a man of education unless he has private means, a profession, or exceptional business ability. For a man of moderate means there is no country on the face of the earth where he can live a more healthy or enjoyable life; but if he expects to be frequently indulging in sport and also to amass the 'almighty dollar,' he will have a sad disappointment. Fishing, shooting and making money do not go well together. I can bear witness to this fact!" - Author's Foreword. Two names written upon front free endpaper. Trifle of writing inside back board. Foxing, primarily to edges. Average wear to publisher's blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt. No dust jacket. 22 x 15.5cm. A sound copy of this British Columbia hunting classic.
