Scarce and attractive. 'National Games of Ballarat and Melbourne produced a wide range of games mainly during the early half of the 20th century in Australia. The company had its beginnings in Ballarat by W. Owen in 1877 growing to prominence towards the end of the century and has been credited to have been the first large-scale Australian manufacturer of locally-designed board games. Application for the actual trademark name National was recorded in 1899 by Christopher George King. Games were often related to Australia's love for recreation and sport; such as cycling golf football tennis and cricket as well as various forms of racing such as motorcars aeroplanes horse or yachting. Contemporary themes of the period produced games such as the exploration of Antarctica World War I the Boer War and the boy scouts. Games that reinforced the moralilty of the times included courtship and marriage snakes and ladders and Fairytales and fables. The design of the boards was colourful and attractive. Many of the games were obviously re-vamped over time with more suitable modern graphics for the changing eras. Christopher George King has been acknowledged as the designer and manufacturer of the games made by the National Games Company. He designed the board games from around the early 1900's till the late 1920's and copyrights can be found in the National Archives of Australia. He is listed in the Victorian electoral rolls as a manufacturer living in Melbourne during the early part of the 20th Century. He was born in England and died at the age of 63 in 1928. The National Game Co. continued to issue board games as late as the 1940s.' - Board Game Geek blog https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamepublisher/5874/national-game-company hardcover

1820Best.-Nr. 17762Amsterdam: Steendrukkerij van C. Goos 1820. The cards are kept in the original publisher's marbled slipcase ca. 4.8 x 7.2 cm with 2 engraved labels one with the title and imprint and one with the rules of the game. Set of 42 lithographed miniature playing cards 21 for Cloris printed in grey and 21 for Roosje printed in blue. Most charming set of miniature playing cards for use of a somewhat daring party game between young people of both sexes. The 42 cards each with an illustration of a couple and a four-line verse are either titled "Cloris" or "Roosje". The Cloris cards were divided between the boys and the Roosje cards between the girls. One of the young men would "propose" by reading the verse of one of his cards and one of the young ladies would answer by reading hers. The verses were full of love and desire but since the cards were read at random Roosje's reponse would not always be the logical answer to Cloris' proposal leading to hilarious situations. The name of the game most likely refers to De bruiloft van Kloris en Roosje which was a Dutch farce written by Dirk Buysero at the end of the 17th century. The play became incredibly popular. It was performed yearly throughout most of the 18th century and still widely known in the 19th century. The slipcase is scuffed and partly torn around the edges and corners. Otherwise in good condition.l Cat. De Koning 617; Gumuchian 3223. Steendrukkerij van C. Goos, unknown

Folio. "It is proposed that a COMPLETE ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS be opened to the public on a fifty cent admission basis which is to be properly laid out as an attractive Zoological and Botanical Garden with the finest and largest private collection of animals birds and reptiles to be seen anywhere on the continent." The advent of the motion picture industry in California had many wide-ranging ramifications on the business world and one was that it created a new market for firms who traditionally supplied animals to circuses and zoos both public and private owned by the likes of William Randolph Hearst. This archive is a report by the Investment Auditors of California for the Horne Corporation that was looking to expand by establishing a zoological garden in the environs of Los Angeles. The Horne Corporation was the largest and most successful of its type at the time apparently the only company in the US that could completely outfit a circus with both animals and show equipment. They were to purchase the Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio for $250000 and thereby sought to provide a similarly complete service to the film studios with both animals and suitable locations for film sets. The head of the company I.S. Horne for whom this report was compiled commenced trading in animals from Kansas City MO around 1914. The range of animals at the their disposal included big game birds reptiles and many of the documents concern the prospect of importing reindeer from Alaska. The material is held in a presentation album and includes the certificate of incorporation in Wilmington Delaware May 13 1929 as well as the by-laws of the corporation minutes of the first meeting the proposal for Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio and a balance sheet. At this stage the company had total assets of $57700 & liabilities of $625388.46; an enumeration of the various animals in inventory including wildebeest sables leopard lynx Rhodesian baboons bushbaby and a large aardvark. Of real interest are the plans for the park including artist's impressions which would be furnished with circus attractions "Monkey Island" jungle setting for motion pictures and an acknowledgment that "before the introduction of the motion picture industry the art of showmanship was not quite so highly developed as it is today." In fact one of the first pictures they supplied animals for was - appropriately enough - Trader Horn which was nominated for the 1931 Academy Award for Best Picture. On a more practical level there is a "Descriptive Classification of Principal Commercial Wild Animals" which lists 340 different animals in some details. There is also an account of hunting wild animals in East Africa as well as a section on animals that have been trained to hunt by man. Furthermore there is also much correspondence which provides much insight into the game industry its clients and the prospects for its future. Horne's venture subsequently became known as the World Jungle Compound in Thousand Oaks California eventually being acquired by 20th Century Fox studios. This archive is a record of a new phase of the entertainment industry. unknown

1419Best.-Nr. 223794東京. Tokyo.: 実業之日本社. Jitsugyo no Nihonsha. Taisho 14 1925. Colour folding sugoroku game sheet 55 x 75.5 cm occasional browning visible on the reverse and a little on the margins but otherwise a very clean and good copy. The game follows a woman's life stages from her wedding to child birth as players progress each month from January to December. In addition daily and seasonal menus are included for each month. The breakfast and lunch menus given are in the main for Japanese dishes but occasionally western dishes such as croquettes and beef steaks appear for dinner. The beginning of the game is the woman's wedding in January. In March she is learning to cook. In April her husband helps cooking as she is suffering from morning sickness. The pregnancy progresses well and in December a baby boy arrives. The goal is a family tea party held in western style to welcome the baby. Both the husband and the wife are featured in illustrations and the companionship of marriage is emphasised as a source of family happiness. This colourful sugoroku game sheet was issued as a supplement to the January 1924 issue of Fujin Sekai Women's World. The magazine was founded in 1906 and was a very popular monthly magazine for women. . 実業之日本社. [Jitsugyo no Nihonsha]. unknown
