Illustration inside front cover. Other illustrations. Rear cover has designation SP8017 0206906. Rare surviving item of corporate ephemera from the brief period when the potential for the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Explosives were actively considered and investigated. This document is undated but has content indicating that it was produced no earlier than 1962. Because it is a product of Gulf General Atomic it was produced between 1967 and 1973 based on when this name was officially used. Based on context this document is probably from the earlier part of this period. This is a marketing brochure for Gulf General Atomic's field services and highlights some of its expertise developed in support of nuclear-effects computer code development high-explosive experimental verification and analytical and experimental participation in underground nuclear explosive testing. Also highlighted is their experience with chemical explosives. General Atomics is an American energy and defense corporation headquartered in San Diego California specializing in research and technology development. This includes physics research in support of nuclear fission and nuclear fusion energy. The company also provides research and manufacturing services for remotely operated surveillance aircraft including the Predator drones airborne sensors and advanced electric electronic wireless and laser technologies. General Atomic GA was founded on July 18 1955 in San Diego California by Frederic de Hoffmann with assistance from notable physicists Edward Teller and Freeman Dyson. Originally the company was part of the General Atomic division of General Dynamics "for harnessing the power of nuclear technologies for the benefit of mankind". In 1956 San Diego voters approved the transfer of land to GA for permanent facilities in Torrey Pines and the John Jay Hopkins Laboratory for Pure and Applied Science was formally dedicated there on June 25 1959. The Torrey Pines facility continues to serve as the company's headquarters. General Atomic's initial projects were the TRIGA nuclear research reactor which was designed so that it was guaranteed to be safe by the laws of nature and Project Orion. GA helped develop and run the San Diego Supercomputer Center. A brief history of the company: 1967: Sold to Gulf Oil and renamed Gulf General Atomic. 1973: Renamed "General Atomic Company" when Royal Dutch Shell Group's Scallop Nuclear Inc. became a 50-50 partner. 1979: Harold Agnew appointed president and CEO 1982: Renamed "GA Technologies Inc" when Gulf bought out its partner. 2008réf. 79429Washington DC: The National Academies Press 2008. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Very good. xviii 339 pages. Oversized book measuring 11-1/4 inches by 8-1/2 inches. Includes Acronyms Preface Summary Introduction Considerations in Identifying and Evaluating the Literature Deployment-Related Stressors The Stress Response Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Health Effects Phychosocial Effects Conclusions and Recommendations and Index. Also includes Tables Boxes and Figures and Acronyms. In this report the committee equated deployment-related stress with being deployed to a war zone although it recognized that not everyone deployed to a war zone would respond to stressors in the same way and that not everyone would necessarily find a particular event stressful. The reaction to deployment-related stressors would depend on numerous factors that were present before during and after deployment. The committee understood that stressors that people experienced in childhood their interactions with friends and family and whether they were wounded during deployment would all play a role in the nature of the response. The committee also understood that some military personnel would have minor reactions and transient health effects some would have severe reactions and more chronic health effects and some would go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder which could be associated with additional health effects. The sixth in a series of congressionally mandated reports on Gulf War veterans' health this volume evaluates the health effects associated with stress. Since the launch of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 there has been growing concern about the physical and psychological health of Gulf War and other veterans. In the late 1990s Congress responded by asking the National Academy of Sciences NAS to review and evaluate the scientific and medical literature regarding associations between illness and exposure to toxic agents environmental or wartime hazards and preventive medicines or vaccines in members of the armed forces who were exposed to such agents. Deployment to a war zone has a profound impact on the lives of troops and on their family members. There are a plethora of stressors associated with deployment including constant vigilance against unexpected attack difficulty distinguishing enemy combatants from civilians concerns about survival caring for the badly injured and witnessing the death of a person. Less traumatic but more pervasive stressors include anxiety about home life such as loss of a job and income impacts on relationships and absence from family. The focus of this report by the Institute of Medicine IOM Committee on Gulf War and Health: Physiologic and Psychosocial Effects of Deployment-Related Stress is the long-term effects of deployment-related stress. Gulf War and Health: Volume 6. Physiologic and Psychosocial Effects of Development Related Stress evaluates the scientific literature regarding association between deployment-related stressors and health effects and provides meaningful recommendations to remedy this problem. A short while ago during a renovation at the plant of the world's largest manufacturers of golf balls the Director of Production noticed in a mound of equipment being discarded a number of golf ball molds dating back to 1899. Believing them to have museum value as historic memorabilia he rescued them for the purpose of having them sent to the Goll Hall of Fame. However when the news got around a number of golf buffs inquired if it was possible to buy balls made from these molds for mementos. 'An Anthology of the Golf Ball' is lhe result of those requests. It contains 12 'antique' balls made from the original molds current between 1899 and 1949 - but with modem construction. They are for Collectors' cabinets - or play.
