1955réf. 027662Germany: Not Published 1955. Collection of 60 letters usually 4-6 pages each. The letters sent from various locations in Germany by Horace J. "Hoddy" Mahon 1932 - 2011 to his future wife Rosemary Heaney in Newark New Jersey. The earliest letters recount Mahon's daily routines while stationed in Germany in the U.S. Army 529th F.A. Battalion. Later he is in the HQ. & HQ. Co. V Corps and his military career becomes entwined with his basketball career detailed here; game travels to Frankfurt Karlsruhe Fulda Grafenwohl and elsewhere. The letters always relate his devotion & commitment to the relationship with his girlfriend their gradually solidifying plans for marriage and the future. Since he has access to European goods the plans include purchases of - furniture clothing cameras and other items then available in Germany. Mahon is a devout Catholic and attends mass & other services very regularly. The letters also enquire of friends and relations and local news especially of favorite New Jersey sports team; and always his deep homesickness - and palpable boredom. The writer's passion comes out in recounting stories of his playing career in the army and road travel. The chronology details his progress from selection as a possible team member to becoming an honored championship elite. He reports humbly on his playing efforts and has low expectations for himself - and his evident talent and playing ability eventually placed him in the first string squad of the V Corp All Europe Basketball Team. He recalls the original recruitment of players being whittled down through various cuts and the challenges faced along the way - coaching decisions injuries and rigorous playing & training schedules juggled with his Army responsibilities; he's opinionated & truthful in his game reportage: Jan. 1956 "Last night we played and finally got back on the win column. The score was 81-56. The whole team looked better and I had my best game since playing with the Corp team24 pts and I must have had about 15 assists" "was in the gym office all morning heating my ankle under the heat lamp. While I was in there Colonel Johnson asked me what I thought was wrong with the teamhe asked me to come over the gym in the afternoon and talk to him.we sat talking for about an hour and a half - He asked for my opinion & I told him exactly what I thought. Within a week something will happen I thinkwhatever happens it benefits the team because I'm tired of seeing us lose to teams we should beat" Feb. 1956 "Last night we played our first league game and came out on top by more than 10pts. We looked pretty sloppy for most of the game but every once in awhile we would look good. Eventually we ought to start playing better together. I played a little more than a half and scored about 17 pts. We play the same team again tonight" in Hanau Outside of basketball other reportage: Oct. 1955 on the German women "it's impossible for a G.I. to avoid them unless he stays right in the barracks. As soon as they see a soldier dollar signs begin to register in their headsI have never touched one of them except when we were in town last night. The touch I mean isn't what you might be thinking. I'll tell you the story you probably won't approve of it but it was pretty funny. We didn't know exactly where to get pizza but we knew the name of a place so we asked this girl if she knew where it was. She doesn't just want to tell us where it is she wants to show us. She acted a little odd but not enough that you would notice it right off. She takes us about a half mile to the place so we ask her if she wants to come in with us and have something to eat. We figured we owed it to her. While we're in there she puts the salt shaker in her purse and the waitress notices that it's gone so she wants to know where it is. The girl starts talking in German but we thought she said J.B. took it so we told the waitress she had it in her purse. The girl got embarrassed then gave it back. We got a big laugh out of it. When we left she wanted me to take her home and latched onto my arm like I was her meal ticket for the next month. We couldn't get rid of her so we stopped by a statue that had water coming from it into a little trough about 3 ft. deep. She's still hanging on to me so I said to J.B. "The only way to get rid of her is to hit her over the head or throw her in the water." At the time I was kidding but when we realized what it would be like we started laughing and decided to do it. She was wet up to her neck. We ran like hell and before we were a half a block from her - her and a cop are chasing our asses down the main street in Karlsruhe. The chased us for a half mile the cop on a bike her runningWhen we were eating she wanted to know our names so we wrote them down for hershe couldn't read English very wellHere's the names we gave.Lt. Hairy Swantz Lt. Howare Theyhanging Lt. Itchy Peters. So when the M.P.'s asked her if she knew our names she pulls this piece of paper out of her purseThe M.P. reads the names offsuppose you think it was a terrible thing to do and I agree with you but it was a spur of the moment idea & we really didn't stop to think about it. Maybe she'll stay away from G.I.'s now. That's the most excitement I've had in more than eight months" Jan. 1956 "After the boxing matches we went up to the E.M. club to play pinochle. It was free beer night and as usual a lot of guys were loaded. A fight broke out between a colored guy & a white one. The negro broke a glass and cut the other guy in the face about 10 times with it. Then one of the negro's friends got into it with someone who tried to break it up and he hit him in the face with a glass. The both white guys were really bleeding hard and then all the negroes there were trying to get into the fight. Before long more glasses and bottles were thrown and I had all I could do to cover up and get over in a corner so I wouldn't get hit. You really never know what the hell is going to happen over here. You take your life into your own hands when you get in a group where there are negroes and whites or germans & americans. I figure a guy is fortunate to get back home without getting cut up. After the fight we left" Composed in a beautiful legible writing hand very competent and literate. No creases. No bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh crisp and unmarked. Recounts van Breda Kolff's basketball playing career with the New York Knicks and his coaching career in high school college Lafayette Hofstra Princeton and professional basketball Los Angeles Lakers Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Jazz. Includes details of his relationships with Wilt Chamberlain Elgin Baylor Jerry West etc. Illustrated with numerous b/w photographs. Bound in the original red leatherette lettered in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. From the Dust Jacket: "The arrival of 'Wilt the Stilt' Chamberlain in Los Angeles created one large 7 foot headache for Coach Butch van Breda Kolff. Whereas Elgin Baylor and Jerry West both legendary superstars responded positively to Butch's 'hands on' coaching policies Wilt resisted the advice and instructions of his new coach. Although the Lakers advanced to the finals of the NBA for the 1968-1969 season Butch recognized the conflict with Wilt and dealt with it as best he could. But in the NBA play-off game with the series tied at 3-3 and the Lakers playing poorly Wilt took himself from the game claiming an injured leg. Butch replaced Stilt with Mel Counts and the Lakers closed the deficit to one point. When Wilt wanted to reenter the game VBK denied him entry and told him to 'sit down.' The Lakers subsequently lost 108-106 Butch was the scapegoat and his career as Coach of the Lakers was over. Subsequently he took on the Detroit Pistons and the New Orleans Jazz as potential turn-around situations. He instantly improved the records of both franchises but confrontations with club-owners who seemed forever critical of his life-style eventually led him away from the NBA. He returned briefly to coached at the College level where he led the University of New Orleans to a Sun Belt conference title. Then he coached the New Orleans Pride a woman's professional team.". 1917réf. 168341917. Unidentified compiler. Photograph album 1917-1920 documents high school life and World War I-era military activity in the United States capturing both educational environments and wartime training as experienced within local communities. The album provides primary visual evidence of student athletics teacher involvement and organized military exercises during the First World War supporting research into youth culture physical education and civilian engagement with wartime preparedness. The inclusion of both school-based and military imagery situates the material within the broader mobilization of American society during the war years. Unidentified compiler. Photograph album. 1917-1920. Album containing 112 silver gelatin photographs with an additional 50 loose images taken in locations including San Jacinto California and Charleston South Carolina. The photographs depict a range of subjects including high school environments where groups of students stand assembled outside a brick school building labeled "High School" and organized athletic teams including a basketball team posed with a "DHS" banner and a player holding a ball marked "DHS." Individual athletic activity is represented through images such as a hurdler mid-jump. Military content includes labeled scenes from 1917 showing "Battery A some Marines and Infantry" as well as an image of a blimp or Zeppelin in flight indicating contemporary military technology. A portrait of a young man in uniform posed with older adults in front of a fence suggests familial connections to military service. Additional photographs document everyday life and leisure including fishing scenes early automobiles such as Model T vehicles a woman cycling a child playing violin and a woman in a canoe. Informal captions provide commentary ranging from observational "Jumping for what the robins left" to humorous "Who are you smiling at" reflecting the compiler's personal engagement with the images. The album emerges from the period of American participation in World War I when military training and patriotic activity intersected with civilian institutions such as schools. Physical education and organized athletics were increasingly emphasized within secondary education often linked to ideals of discipline and preparedness. The geographic spread between California and South Carolina suggests mobility or travel possibly connected to professional or military contexts. Album of 44 pages with first 28 pages detached; photographs range in size from approximately 1.75 x 2.5 inches to 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Edge wear and small chips to detached leaves; overall good condition. A substantial visual record of high school life and wartime culture in the United States during the late 1910s. unknown
1949réf. BK0106Del Rey California 1949. Five gelatin silver photographs approximately 8 x 10 inches. Four with the stamp of photographer Paulo Takahashi. Some curling and edge creasing with occasional light staining and wear; very good overall. A fine group of photographs documenting the Del Rey basketball team during its 1948-49 Western Young Buddhist League championship season. The principal image shows the players seated on the gymnasium floor amid a large crowd and is captioned in white "'48 DEL REY '49 / W.Y.B.L. 'A' CHAMPS." The remaining four photographs show game action in the same crowded gymnasium including shots under the basket and a player driving through the lane with spectators packed along the walls only a few feet from the court. Basketball was already a substantial part of Japanese American Buddhist youth culture in California before the war. Contemporary newspapers record Del Rey teams participating in Central California Buddhist basketball during the 1930s1 while the Del Rey YBA was sufficiently active by 1939 to take responsibility for issues of the regional Bussei Review.2 The Western Young Buddhist League itself had prewar roots extending at least to the 1920s with records of its presidents and conference activities preserved among the Buddhist Churches of America papers at UCLA.3 Organized Japanese American basketball was being rebuilt rapidly after wartime forced removal and incarceration during the period of these photographs. An account of the postwar leagues notes that by 1946 Central Valley teams were already playing under Buddhist league sponsorship while Japanese American communities in the Bay Area were still organizing their first postwar circuit.4 Paulo Takahashi was an established Central California photographer. Pacific Citizen credited photographs to him by 1952 and identified "Paulo Takahashi Studio" with a Del Rey address in 1953; by 1958 he was active in the Professional Photographers Association of Central California. 1 "YWBA CAGE RESULTS" The Japanese American News January 17 1934 1. 2 "'Bussei Review' to Be Published in Del Rey" Japanese American News November 25 1939 2. 3 Buddhist Churches of America records Collection 2364. Marsh 1907 - 1982 a native New Yorker was among the fundamental figures in the growth of college basketball as a major sport. Marsh was assistant sports editor of the New York Herald Tribune. Marsh started at the paper as a copy boy while still a student at City College. By 1930 he was regularly covering college basketball then a sport confined to local rivalries in cramped campus gyms. An occasional "big game" found its way to an armory. Ned Irish introduced intersectional doubleheaders to Madison Square Garden in December 1934 and Marsh was quick to see the potential of the sport. He helped organize the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association that year and in 1938 was a leader in founding the N.I.T. which was originally sponsored by the writers group. Marsh was also attracted by college football partly because of the Herald Tribune's sponsorship of an All-Star game for the benefit of the Fresh Air Fund and partially because of his association with Columbia. He served three terms 1942-47 1951-53 and 1966-68 as Columbia's sports information director. Marsh along with Everett B. Morris of the Herald Tribune started the East-West College All-Star basketball game at Madison Square Garden in 1946. The annual event which ran until 1964 was also a benefit for the Fresh Air Fund. Marsh was not only active in the promotion of the Garden event but also in the assembling of the teams and maintaining the relationship with the N.C.A.A. and the colleges whose players appeared in the game. The All-Star game gave heightened visibility to college players and the schools they represented. Marsh was instrumental in developing the Eastern College Athletic Conference into a major factor in the organization of college sports. The E.C.A.C. began as the central office of Eastern Intercollegiate Athletics in 1938 primarily as a clearinghouse for the assignment of game officials.
