The cover features Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott which set the stage for a return bout on June 25 1948. After a difficult first fight which many believed Walcott won Louis won by a knockout in the second bout. This issue provides a lot of information on Joe Louis including a detailed account of his ring earnings. Perhaps the significance of this contest was that it would be only the third time in history that two African Americans would fight for the heavyweight title. However boxing’s' color line was not as rigid as some other sports and by the late 1940s there had been several African American world champions. The Ring Inc., books

2016br.

It was patronised by royaly and nobility although often illegal. It differed from boxing as fighting took place with bare fists and bouts lasted as long as the fighters could stand - often seventy or more rounds. Severe injury was the rule and sometimes fighters died. Illustrated.

2015br.
