1936réf. 28415n.p.: no publisher indicated. 1936. Ephemera. Near Fine. minor handling wear tiny puncture near bottom of left margin equally tiny stain in top margin. two B&W photographic portraits A curious and uncommon piece of Hollywood ephemera a suitable-for framing assemblage with three elements: the text of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address mounted together with two photographs of Charles "Chic" Sale -- one as he appeared in full makeup as Abraham Lincoln in the short dramatic film THE PERFECT TRIBUTE adapted from the short story by Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews directed by Edward Sloman and produced and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in August 1935; the other a smaller portrait of Sale sans makeup. The photos are both tipped onto the underlying backing a piece of plain white stock measuring 9" x 12.5"; onto this is mounted a slightly smaller piece of better-quality paper with cameo cut-outs for both the photos leaving a narrow margin on all sides. At the lower left corner of the piece is an INSCRIPTION that reads: "For / My friend / Charles King / Sincerely / Charles 'Chic' Sale / Aug. 17 1936." My surmise is that this was something Sale put together as a self-promotional item touting his atypical dramatic turn as Honest Abe a former vaudevillian at this stage of his life he was primarily engaged in playing "old man" character parts in the movies even though he was only in his early 50s rather than anything issued or authorized by M-G-M. If it had been the latter it almost certainly would bear the studio's logo; plus the date of the inscription is a full year after the release date of the film. Maybe Sale was trying to promote himself into a better class of character parts -- but if so alas it was too little too late: less than three months after he inscribed this particular copy he caught pneumonia and died. If you're interested by the way THE PERFECT TRIBUTE can be viewed on YouTube. In a weird confluence one of the actors with a small uncredited role in the film is the man who would soon become Hollywood's next go-to "old man" character actor: Walter Brennan. Contributor . réf. 52222This journalist and businessman co-founded the publishing giant Simon & Schuster with his friend Richard Simon in 1924 and for the next few decades published numerous notable works in many fields. TLS 1p 8" X 10" New York NY 17 January 1939. Addressed to Joe Laurie care of The Lambs Club. Very good. Two faint horizontal folds and light age toning. Interesting letter on "The Inner Sanctum of Simon and Schuster" letterhead in which Schuster plugs a book idea to vaudeville radio and Broadway performer Laurie 1892-1954. Schuster quotes a lengthy book idea given him by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer advertising manager Silas "Si" Seadler 1897-1981 reading in part: "For years some of America's most famous anecdotes have emanated from the Lambs Club. Last night I attended one of their functions and it occurred to me that a book could be made up of the favorite Lambs Club tales of their celebrated membership. I spoke to Bill Gaxton actor and Lambs club president who was our host and with Victor Moore comedian and actor who was in the party. They thought it was a corking idea and Moore told me that Joe Laurie Jr. now in California I think had made it a hobby to collect these anecdotes. Moore thought that Laurie would be the right person to get for such a chore." He concludes "How does this strike you We'd be interested in seeing an outline and some sample material as a basis for consideration." Boldly signed in green ink. Schuster is shaking the bushes in passing along this notion to Laurie and while no book came of it perhaps Schuster planted a seed -- Laurie did later publish "Cream of the Crop" 1947 "Show Biz: From Vaude to Video" 1951 and "Vaudeville: From the Honky-Tonks to the Palace" 1953. unknown

He took his first photographs at the age of 15 for two local newspapers. In 1936 Smith entered Notre Dame University in Wichita where a special photographic scholarship was created for him. A year later he left the university and went to New York City. After studying with Helene Sanders at the New York Institute of Photography in 1937 he began working for News-Week later Newsweek. He was fired for refusing to use medium-format cameras and joined the Black Star agency as a freelancer……Smith worked as a war correspondent for Flying magazine 1943–44 and a year later for Life. He followed the island-hopping American offensive against Japan and suffered severe injuries while simulating battle conditions for Parade which required him to undergo surgery for the next two years……Once recuperated Smith worked for Life again between 1947 and 1955 before resigning in order to join Magnum Photos as an associate. In 1957 he became a full member of Magnum. Smith was fanatically dedicated to his mission as a photographer. Because of this dedication he was often regarded by editors as “troublesome.”….A year after moving to Tucson to teach at the University of Arizona Smith died of a stroke. His archives are held by the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson Arizona. Today Smith’s legacy lives on through the W. Eugene Smith Fund to promote “humanistic photography” founded in 1980 which awards photographers for exceptional accomplishments in the field. New York: Aperture., 1969 paperback
