Best.-Nr. 20251London: Bradbury and Evans. 1853. First edition in book form. First edition in book form. Late 20th century full burgundy morocco with decorative morocco onlay titles in gilt to the spine. All edges with contemporary marbling. Modern marbled endpapers. Frontispiece title page vignette and 38 full-page illustrations by H.K. Browne. A very good copy indeed the binding square and firm. The contents with the inevitable darkening of the plate edges with some offsetting to the opposite pages are otherwise clean throughout. The original blank front endpaper has the ownership inscription of the famous English cricketer Heathfield H. Stephenson dated 1894. A curious and appealing cricketing association copy. With all first issue points within the text present. Smith part I 6b. Charles Dickens' works are among the most celebrated in the English literary canon but cricket fans might argue that his greatest achievement was inadvertently triggering the long international cricket rivalry of England and Australia. The first ever England vs Australia tour was originally conceived as a Victorian PR stunt and sponsorship opportunity by two entrepreneurial Melbourne-based businessmen the wine merchants Felix William Spiers and Christopher Pond. Having failed to persuade Charles Dickens to conduct a lecture tour of Australia the two Englishmen turned their attention to cricket. The sport's popularity was growing in Australia so Spiers and Pond invited a team of leading English cricketers to tour the country. Twelve players signed up for the tour. Named "The Eleven of All England" or "H. H. Stephenson's XI" after the English Captain Heathfield Harman Stephenson they each received £150 first class passage aboard SS Great Britain costing 70 guineas plus all expenses. The inaugural English tour of Australia was a great success promoting the development of Australian cricket and inspiring later English teams to visit Australia. Best.-Nr. 147305Very Good. Octavo a card bifolium with the programme and menu printed on the two middle pages. In excellent condition. The front cover is signed by David Hookes the guest speaker for the evening. David Hookes 1955-2004 made his first-class debut with South Australia in 1975-76; he was state captain from 1981 to 1990 and retired in 1992. He played in 23 Tests between 1977 and 1985 with a World Series Cricket career in between in 1977-79. 'Natural aggressive and irrepressible David Hookes was an Australian cricketer of the 1970s who remained one into the 21st century. Not that he was a reactionary or relic; on the contrary he was a savvy media performer and an innovative coach. But he had throughout his career a breezy confidence that recalled days when cricket was a more spontaneous and flamboyant affair. It was while indulging in the oldest of Australian rites the post-match drink that Hookes was killed in circumstances still shocking in their senselessness by a bouncer's gratuitous punch on January 19 2004 aged 48' Gideon Haigh in his 'Wisden' obituary. unknown
1985Best.-Nr. 140591Lahore: Syed Abbas Kazim 1985. First Edition. Paperback. Good. Lahore Syed Abbas Kazim 1985. Quarto six issues bound in one volume 128 112 104 112 116 and 104 pages including the covers with numerous illustrations many in colour. Later binder's cloth retaining the original colour-pictorial wrappers a few slightly cropped at the edges when rebound; newsprint a little tanned; two leaves lacking from Number 5; a few creases marks and other minor signs of use and age; in good condition overall. The first six issues of this short-lived magazine launched by legendary Pakistani cricket journalist Gul Hameed Bhatti. By early 1986 he was back writing for 'The Cricketer Pakistan' so these issues may be the extent of the publication see Mohammad Naukhez Arsalan: 'Remembering Gul Hameed Bhatti' in 'Scoreline' 20 November 2020. It is sometimes referred to as 'Cricket Star'. Padwick II: 2324 'continues "Padwick I" 3961 to date'. That reference is to 'The Cricketer' Pakistan with the comment '1972 to date issue for Oct. 1977 was vol. 6 no. 7'. The editorial in the first number of 'Cricketstar' does not substantiate this.
