ref. 147305Very Good. Octavo a card bifolium with the programme and menu printed on the two middle pages. In excellent condition. The front cover is signed by David Hookes the guest speaker for the evening. David Hookes 1955-2004 made his first-class debut with South Australia in 1975-76; he was state captain from 1981 to 1990 and retired in 1992. He played in 23 Tests between 1977 and 1985 with a World Series Cricket career in between in 1977-79. 'Natural aggressive and irrepressible David Hookes was an Australian cricketer of the 1970s who remained one into the 21st century. Not that he was a reactionary or relic; on the contrary he was a savvy media performer and an innovative coach. But he had throughout his career a breezy confidence that recalled days when cricket was a more spontaneous and flamboyant affair. It was while indulging in the oldest of Australian rites the post-match drink that Hookes was killed in circumstances still shocking in their senselessness by a bouncer's gratuitous punch on January 19 2004 aged 48' Gideon Haigh in his 'Wisden' obituary. unknown

The first six issues of this short-lived magazine launched by legendary Pakistani cricket journalist Gul Hameed Bhatti. By early 1986 he was back writing for 'The Cricketer Pakistan' so these issues may be the extent of the publication see Mohammad Naukhez Arsalan: 'Remembering Gul Hameed Bhatti' in 'Scoreline' 20 November 2020. It is sometimes referred to as 'Cricket Star'. Padwick II: 2324 'continues "Padwick I" 3961 to date'. That reference is to 'The Cricketer' Pakistan with the comment '1972 to date issue for Oct. 1977 was vol. 6 no. 7'. The editorial in the first number of 'Cricketstar' does not substantiate this. ref. 144619It is an exceptional gelatin silver photographic print measuring a gigantic 530 × 510 mm approximately printed from the negative by the photographer for Michael Treloar in the mid-1990s. Treloar went to an exhibition of Simpson's work at his studio at the time and saw the image on display. It had been commissioned originally as part of a series of portraits of significant older South Australians for an exhibition at the David Jones Gallery in the later 1970s. Treloar in turn commissioned David Simpson to produce a small quantity of prints ten from memory. The photographic paper used to print them was old stock long obsolete; the results were so impressive another batch possibly five was commissioned. Alas only modern paper could be had - still very large at 470 × 475 mm still a wonderful portrait - but the difference was sufficient to determine that no more prints were commissioned. The original lot were signed and dated 1977 by the photographer and subsequently all prints were personally signed in black felt-tipped pen by Sir Don Bradman. The group of very large format prints has been in storage for nearly twenty years forgotten about if not exactly lost until now . The outstanding quality of these portrait photographs make them a far more fitting tribute to the man than a lot of the pedestrian and indifferent material universally on offer. The 470 × 475 mm prints signed by Sir Don Bradman are available for $1250 each. unknown
1934ref. 144537London 28 George Street Hanover Square W.1.: Lenare 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London 28 George Street Hanover Square W.1. Lenare 1934. Two large-format gelatin silver photographs each 351 × 264 mm signed by the photographer in the negative with his studio inkstamp and manuscript reference number on the versos. Some silvering-out mainly around the edges; tiny creases to the corners of the white margins of one print; overall in excellent condition loosely inserted in the original cloth portfolio lettered in gilt on the padded front panel in excellent condition albeit with a spot of surface wear near the middle of the spine. Clarrie Grimmett the NZ-born Australian Test cricketer was one of the finest leg-spinners of his time. He is photographed in two different poses: head-and-shoulders from the side wearing his cap and blazer; and three-quarter length from the front wearing pullover and blazer with cap in hand. Lenare was the professional name of Leonard George Green 1883-1946; he specialised in society portraits at his London studio. Provenance: Clarrie Grimmett originally purchased at the Christie's auction of the Clarrie Grimmett Collection sold in Melbourne on 13 May 1998. Grimmett played 37 Tests between 1924 and 1936 taking 216 wickets at an average of 24.21. His record for the fastest bowler to take 200 wickets in Tests achieved in his 36th match stood for 82 years and was broken only in 2018. His first-class record of 1424 wickets in 248 matches between 1911 and 1941 includes 513 wickets in his 79 Sheffield Shield matches. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1931 along with Don Bradman. He was posthumously inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 1996 as one of the ten inaugural members and in 2009 he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. 2 items.
