Orlando furioso Italian: orˈlando fuˈrjoËzo; -oËso; The Frenzy of Orlando more literally Raging Roland is an Italian epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto which has exerted a wide influence on later culture. The earliest version appeared in 1516 although the poem was not published in its complete form until 1532. Orlando Furioso is a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's unfinished romance Orlando Innamorato Orlando in Love published posthumously in 1495. In its historical setting and characters it shares some features with the Old French Chanson de Roland of the eleventh century which tells of the death of Roland. The story is also a chivalric romance which stemmed from a tradition beginning in the late Middle Ages and continuing in popularity in the 16th century and well into the 17th. Orlando is the Christian knight known in French and subsequently English as Roland. The story takes place against the background of the war between Charlemagne's Christian paladins and the Saracen army that has invaded Europe and is attempting to overthrow the Christian empire. The poem is about war and love and the romantic ideal of chivalry. It mixes realism and fantasy humor and tragedy. The stage is the entire world plus a trip to the Moon. The large cast of characters features Christians and Saracens soldiers and sorcerers and fantastic creatures including a gigantic sea monster called the orc and a flying horse called the hippogriff. Many themes are interwoven in its complicated episodic structure but the most important are the paladin Orlando's unrequited love for the pagan princess Angelica which drives him mad; the love between the female Christian warrior Bradamante and the Saracen Ruggiero who are supposed to be the ancestors of Ariosto's patrons the d'Este family of Ferrara; and the war between Christian and Infidel. The poem is divided into forty-six cantos each containing a variable number of eight-line stanzas in ottava rima a rhyme scheme of abababcc. Ottava rima had been used in previous Italian romantic epics including Luigi Pulci's Morgante and Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato. Ariosto's work is 38736 lines long in total making it one of the longest poems in European literature. Insurance & handling is included free. réf. OrlandoFurioso1540An opportunity to acquire one of the earliest editions of Orlando Furioso printed in 1540 nearly a post-incunabulum! Orlanda Furisoso was and remains one of the most popular pieces of secular literature produced during the Renaissance i.e. the 16th century. A scarce edition as I could only find one copy in the British Library via Worldcat. First complete edition 1532. A 1533 second edition sold at auction in 2008 at Christie's for a staggering 21500 pounds-sterling about 36000 pounds in today's money or $50000! Orlando Furioso di Messer Ludovico Ariosto con La Giunta Noviss-Mamente Stampato e Corretto. Apresse Mapheo Pasini MDXXX. Loosely translates: The Frenzy or Madness of Roland by Mr. Ludovico Ariosto originally printed by La Giunta and newly printed and corrected. Printed by Mapheo Pasini 1540. Size Binding: Small octavo measuring 6 1/4 x 4 1/2 x 2" about 16 x 11 1/2 x 2 1/2 cm in dark brown leather with a lighter brown spine. Probably bound circa 1750 to 1850 with a later spine end-papers are probably circa the same period. The main text is complete with some post-text material incomplete. See collation. Collation: marble end-paper blank; Title Page with inset woodcut; Dedication to Ludovico Dolce probably a patron of the original edition; Main Text beginning with Canto Primo paginated by leaf 1-244 588 pages in the modern sense; Pages 9-16 miss-bound after page 24; page 96 miss-numbered as 69. Essentially complete; Second Dedication to Dolce; Appologia; four pages of annotations or errati; One page of contents but only one page of such beginning with "A" and one page of an Index beginning with "A" and ending with "D". The first leaf of a contents and the first of the index appear on the recto and verso of the same leaf so it appears they were never printed properly for this copy so the addendum text was never complete; Colophon with woodcut of an angel holding the hand of a child; Portrait of Ariosto. Condition: Generally in very good condition. The binding is holding fairly well Boards are intact and not too worn. Typical age-toning and some staining to the lower portion of the title page and verso but the rest of the pages are quite clean. NO chips or tears that I can see Possibly a faint stamp on the title page. NOTE: Orlando Furioso is a chivalric romance epic fantasy poem written by Ludovico Ariosto at the beginning of the 16th century and completed circa 1520. Portions were printed subsequently but the first complete edition appeared in 1532. It became one of the most popular secular texts of the 16th century going through many editions up until 1600. An English translation was completed by Sir John Harington in 1591 and went through two more editions in 1603 and then in 1634. The English translation has a funny story. Harington who knew Italian had translated a couple of the cantos regarded as rather risque for the time. Hand-written copies were circulated among the English nobility until Queen Elizabeth herself acquired copies. She summoned Harington and scolded him for possibly compromising her ladies-in-waiting with such racy stuff. Then she said "Where's the rest of it" Harington replied he really didn't intend to translate the entire epic poem. Nonsense! She banished him from court until he completed the entire English translation which was printed in 1590-1 and dedicated to the queen herself. NOTE: The pictures are of the actual item for sale.
