1927rif. 21260791927. New York: Golden Hind Press for the subscribers of the Biblion Society. 1927. 4to. Publisher's black cloth spine label printed in red; pp. 47 1 advertisements in the rare printed dust-jacket; title-page and first page of text printed in pale blue and pink; slight soiling and a few marks to dust-jacket spine ends and extremities lightly worn; a near-fine copy in a good jacket.First edition of these spurious translations of Boccaccio involving accidental mother-son incest and friendship between Catholics and Protestants despite the fact that Boccaccio died a century before Luther's birth falsely claiming to be illustrated with 'new sketches' by Beardsley this copy in the rare dust-jacket.This edition was distributed by the Golden Hind Press for subscribers of the Biblion Society both operated by notorious publisher Samuel Roth. He would later be the plaintiff in the landmark 1957 Supreme Court case Roth vs United States which redefined what constituted obscene material unprotected by First Amendment rights. In 1930 he spent two months in prison for selling obscene material including Joyce's Ulysses which he had published in serialised bowdlerised form without Joyce's permission two years earlier. The present edition claims to present several hitherto unpublished illustrations by Beardsley each captioned 'New Sketch'. All in fact had been previously published: they comprise 'The Mirror of Love' four illustrations from Le Morte D'Arthur and 'Lysistrata Haranguing the Athenian Woman' from the 1896 edition of Lysistrata. The phallic vignettes between paragraphs are the work of Hungarian illustrator Walter Pogany. Jonah Lubin and Maria Laurids Lazzarotti attribute this pseudo-translation to Romanian-born writer of Yiddish pulp fiction David Moses Hermalin 1865-1921 who had produced Yiddish adaptations of Shakespeare Tolstoy Conan Doyle and at the start of the twentieth century Boccaccio publishing Paskarela through B. Rabinovits and Madam Babeta through the Hebrew Publishing Company in New York City. 'Paskarela and Madam Babeta are longer versions of those same stories that Roth printed in English twenty-seven years later. Unless some proto-version of these two stories surfaces the most likely explanation seems to be that the tales were composed by Hermalin as pseudotranslations of Boccaccio and that Roth or someone close to him translated these stories and passed them off once more as authentic lost stories by Boccaccio.'By birth a Galician Jew Roth knew Yiddish and used Yiddish sources to produce translations of Heinrich Heine since he had no German. He was also an inveterate publisher of phony translations . He had the means the motivation and the sheer brazenness necessary to take a pair of Yiddish fakes translate them into English and pass them off as genuine discoveries to an unsuspecting literary public' Lubin and Lazzarotti online.Library Hub finds three copies in the UK BL CUL Goldsmiths. Not in Samuels Lasner; Healey 4907 note 'one assumes that both stories and drawings are pastiches and fakes'. 1906rif. 170171London: Henry F. Bumpus 1906. A finely bound copy of Rigg's edition the "most long lived of the early 20th-century versions" Armstrong p. 270. First published in 1903 in 1930 the translation was used for the Everyman's Library series and it remained the canonical British Decameron for the next half century. Rigg's translation leaves the most explicit part of the erotic story cycle in Italian the effects of which Armstrong argues "have been far-reaching for the reputation of Boccaccio in the British Isles at least. the editorial decision to demarcate the censorship in this way has no doubt contributed to the notorious reputation of this book as a repository of obscenity" ibid. p. 272. The Chalon plates originally appeared as a set of 20 alongside John Payne's translation of 1893; for Rigg's edition the publishers cut the number to the 12 least explicit plates. It also features woodcut reproductions in the introduction after the first illustrated Decameron published in Venice in 1492. 2 vols octavo 256 x 181 mm. Photogravure frontispiece to vol. The Labirinto d'amore was written in the mid-1350s; it is also known as Corbaccio an alternative title introduced in the Florentine editio princeps of 1487 although the word 'corbaccio' never actually occurs in the work. It certainly derives from the Italian 'corvo' i.e. crow possibly recalling the satire Ibis by Ovid one of Boccaccio's favourite sources. Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari

De Casibus Virorum Illustrium On the Fates of Famous Men is a work of 56 biographies in Latin prose composed by the Florentine poet Giovanni Boccaccio of Certaldo in the form of moral stories of the falls of famous people similar to his work of 106 biographies On Famous Women. De casibus is an encyclopedia of historical biography and a part of the classical tradition of historiography. It deals with the fortunes and calamities of famous people starting with the biblical Adam going to mythological and ancient people then to people of Boccaccio's own time in the fourteenth century. The work was so successful it spawned what has been referred to as the De casibus tradition influencing many other famous authors such as Geoffrey Chaucer John Lydgate and Laurent de Premierfait. De casibus also inspired character figures in works like The Canterbury Tales The Monk's Tale the Fall of Princes c. 1438 Des cas de nobles hommes et femmes c. 1409 and Caida de principles a fifteenth-century Spanish collection and A Mirror for Magistrates a very popular sixteenth-century continuation written by William Baldwin and others. Boccaccio wrote the core of his work from about 1355 to 1360 with revisions and modifications up to 1374. For almost four hundred years this work was the better known of his material. The forceful written periodic Latin work was far more widely read then the now famous vernacular Tuscan/Italian tales of Decameron. The Renaissance period saw the secular biography development which was spearheaded partly by the success of this work being a stimulus and driving force of the new biography-moral genre. Boccaccio's perspective focuses on the disastro awaiting all who are too favored by luck and on the inevitable catastrophes awaiting those with great fortune. He offers a moral commentary on overcoming misfortune by adhering to virtue through a moral God's world. Here the monastic chronicle tradition combines with the classical ideas of Senecan tragedy. De casibus stems from the tradition of exemplary literature works about famous people. It showed with the lives of these people that it was not only biographies but snapshots of their moral virtues. Boccaccio relates biographies of famous people that were at the height of happiness and fell to misfortune when they least expected it. This sad event is sometimes referred to as a "de casibus tragedy" after this work. William Shakespeare created characters based on this phenomenon as did Christopher Marlowe.
