1554rif. 35098Venetia: Appresso Vincenzo Valgrisi 1554. Very early Valgrisi printing the first done in 1552. Illustrated with historiated initials at the beginning of every novella engraved printer's mark to the title-page Quarto contemporary Italian vellum with yap edges. 8 487 1 10 Tavola 2 8 Epiteti 50 Second Title Page: Vocabolario pp. A very handsome copy a small number of leaves browned and fragile occasionally a small portion of the text excised generally crisp and clean with minor age evidence. VERY SCARCE. THE WORK IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EDITIONS OF BOCCACCIO PRODUCED IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. The Life of Sir Giovanni Boccaccio written by Francesco Sansovino precedes the text and at the end is Ruscelli's General Vocabulary of all the entries used by Boccaccio. The General Vocabulary was compiled to help readers navigate the 14th-century Tuscan prose and Ruscelli’s editorial work aimed to refine and standardize the text of Boccaccio during a period when the Decameron was subject to intense scrutiny editing and eventual counter-reformation censorship. Copies from this press are notable examples of Renaissance Italian bookmaking woodcut artistry and early modern publishing history. Appresso Vincenzo Valgrisi hardcover

An occasional flaw to the paper originating with the printer and a very few marks from damp typical and not affecting the quality of the copy. AN IMPORTANT PRINTING OF BOCCACCIO'S MASTERPIECE. The 1614 edition of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Il Decameron published by Alessandro Vecchi in Venice is a notable printing of the famous 14th-century text highly valued today by rare book collectors and literary historians. This printing utilizes the famous linguistic revision edited by Lionardo Salviati which was originally published in 1582. Following the Catholic Church's censorship and banning of the Decameron in the mid-16th century Salviati provided the avenue to preserving Boccaccio’s celebrated Tuscan prose style. The edition features 109 woodcut illustrations embedded directly within the text. Rather than cutting entirely new blocks Vecchi reused the highly regarded Renaissance woodcuts originally crafted for Gabriel Giolito’s 1546 edition which was famous for its visual storytelling. To introduce the readers to each section each individual novella begins with an engraved vignette with an additional prominent illustration highlighting the beginning of the tenth day. The title page features the distinct printer's device belonging to Alessandro Vecchi's Venetian workshop. During this era Venice was the printing capital of Europe and printers like Vecchi found great commercial success by combining popular texts with woodblocks from previous decades. Vecchi actually published a few iterations of this specific setup over the years—including printings in 1597 and 1602—making the 1614 edition part of a successful multi-decade run of Boccaccio's masterpieces The result found in Vecchi's 1614 printing is a fascinating historical artifact: a Decameron that remains delightfully scandalous and linguistically beautiful but one where the Catholic Church’s authority has been thoroughly protected from Boccaccio's sharpest wit. 1825rif. SET19-C-6London: William Pickering 1825. First edition. Cloth. Fair. 9" by 5.5". Thomas Stothard. A scarce first edition set of 'The Decameron' by Giovanni Boccaccio illustrated with ten plates by the famous English illustrator and engraver Thomas Stothard. Collated: Complete in three volumes with the 10 Stothard Plates. First edition with an introduction by Ugo Foscolo or Niccolò Foscolo a noted Italian writer and poet. Scarce. Giovanni Boccaccio was an Italian author and poet a friend student and correspondent of Petrarch an important Renaissance humanist and the author of a number of notable works including 'The Decameron' 'On Famous Women' and his poetry in the Italian vernacular. Boccaccio is particularly notable for his dialogue of which it has been said that it surpasses in verisimilitude that of virtually all of his contemporaries since they were medieval writers and often followed formulaic models for character and plot. 'The Decameron' with the subtitle of 'Prince Galehaut' is a 14th-century medieval allegory by Giovanni Boccaccio told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350 and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The various tales of love in 'The Decameron' range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit practical jokes and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import it documents life in 14th-century Italy.
