1868Best.-Nr. 1052531868. London: Pickering 1868. Small 8vo xiv 112 pp. and 8 pp. of ads at the front. Original cloth red printed paper backstrip label darkened some pencil annotations in the text. A very good copy. Ink signature at front of Wm. C. Pritchard. § New edition taken largely from the 1866 edition with some slight changes including an expanded preface and two more poems. Although a typographic issue of the Songs had appeared in 1839 and Gilchrist and Rossetti had included them in the 1863 biography neither of those versions were faithful to Blake's original text with Rossetti in particular standing accused of efforts at "improvement". The editor of this edition Richard Herne Shepherd gives for the first time in accessible form the exact text of Blake's idiosyncratic engraved publications of 1789 and 1794 only twenty-two complete copies of each of which survive though omitting lines from "Mary" and from "Auguries of Innocence" which contained the word "whore". The additional poems two of them previously unpublished are printed from Blake's original manuscripts. Bentley Blake Books 335 B. unknown books

1922Best.-Nr. 89590Oxford: Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press 1922. First Limited Edition. No. 8 of 650 numbered copies. This a presentation copy from the Duke & Duchess of Hamilton to "Mr. & Mrs. Alington" inscribed on half-title: "For Mr. & Mrs. Alington / with grateful thanks for the loving care given to Malcolm & David / from the Duke & Duchess of Hamilton" dated 1926. Also with the later undated ownership signature of prominent Scottish poet and Blake scholar Ruthven Todd. Folio ca. 20" x 15"; original maroon cloth with gilt spine and cover titles; 215pp text 64 unnumbered leaves of plates printed both sides six in color. Contents complete and fine; mild external wear and soil still a handsome Near Fine copy in the publisher's binding. These designs by Blake never published were originally in the possession Blake's close friend the artist John Flaxman 1755-1826; in 1828 Flaxman's estate was sold by Christie's at which time the drawings made their way into the trade then eventually into the library of Hamilton Palace. Through a happy accident the drawings were not dispersed with the palace library in 1882 and remained undiscovered until the estate's tragic dismantling in 1922. In conjunction with the Duke and Duchess Grierson commissioned the reproductions and saw the current work into print adding a keenly perceptive essay on the drawings' history and their place in the evolution of Blake's technique. Though not certain the presentation to "Mr. and Mrs. Alington" is almost certainly to Charles Alington founder of the Labrador Retriever Club in 1920 of which the Duchess was a charter member a champion breeder and an expert on field trials and judging. The Duchess Hamilton was herself a major figure in the field trial world winning the premier championship in 1909 with her Labrador bitch Dungavel Phoebe. She was also a major force for animal welfare co-founding in 1906 the Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society. A distinguished copy of a work that appears infrequently in commerce. We note no other presentation copies in the auction record; the Todd provenance is a very nice addition indeed. Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press unknown books

1946Best.-Nr. 90012Paris: La Jeune Parque 1946. First Thus. One of 2000 copies on Velin de Lana this copy unnumbered; presumably one of a few hors-commerce author's copies. Inscribed on second flyleaf: "à Son Excellence Monsieur Duff Cooper / ce message d'amité franco-britannique en respectueux et fidèles souvenirs." Octavo 25cm. Morocco-backed marbled boards; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt; 2 preliminary leaves; 14 115 19pp; illus; includes engraved extra-title frontispiece and 10 wood-engraved text illustrations by Jean-Vital Prost based on original designs by Blake. Spine leather minutely rubbed on raised bands gentle rubbing to bottom board edges else a very fresh Near Fine copy. Includes two brief essays on Blake by Daniel-Rops. With Cooper's handsome engraved rococco bookplate to front pastedown designed by Rex Whistler. Text in French. Lovely bibliophile edition of this modern French translation published immediately after the Second World War. The inscription to Cooper who had been appointed British Ambassador to France immediately after the fall of the Vichy government expresses "a message of Franco-British friendship." Perhaps this was intended as something of a peace offering as Daniel-Rops a prominent conservative Catholic intellectual had initially supported the conservative social direction of Pétain's "Revolution Nationale" and the Vichy régime - though as the war went on he became if not a critic of then at least no longer an apologist for Nazi collaborationism. Cooper who had been Churchill's Minister of Information at the beginning of the War and among the British Conservative Party's most steadfast anti-Fascists would have known something of Daniel-Rops' political pedigree perhaps lending an extra shade of meaning to the author's inscription. An interesting and distinguished copy of a beautifully-produced book with the fabulous Whistler bookplate. La Jeune Parque unknown books
