Predictions of the end of oil can create anxiety on Wall Street and in Washington stoking fears that production has hit a ceiling and prices will rise in perpetuity. Yet these dire visions have always proven wrong. Market Madness is the story of four waves of American anxiety over the last 100 years about a looming end to oil reserves. Their sweeping pattern-as large price increases lead to widespread shortage fears that eventually dissipate when oil production rises again and prices moderate-has defined the wild price swings in the oil market down to the present day. Blake Clayton a Wall Street stock analyst and adjunct fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations makes the case for the need for better information communication and transparency. While these measures will not eliminate volatility and unpredictability completely they would mitigate unnecessary price spikes and improve both investor and government decision-making. Market Madness is the first study to employ Nobel Laureate economist Robert Shiller's "new era economics" beyond the markets to which he famously applied it-the 1990s dot-com equity market and the mid-2000s housing market-in order to better understand the dynamics of speculative bubbles and irrationality in the commodities markets. In so doing it breaks new ground in illuminating how mass beliefs about the future of a vital asset like oil take shape and what the future of energy may hold. hardcover

A biography of the naturalist and geologist University of Rochester professor and founder of Ward's Natural Science a business which collected artifacts to be sold to museums. "Henry Augustus Ward 1834-1906 was an American naturalist and geologist born in Rochester New York. After attending Williams College and the Lawrence Scientific School Harvard where he was an assistant of Louis Agassiz he traveled in Egypt Arabia and Palestine and studied at the Jardin des Plantes the Sorbonne and the School of Mines in Paris and at the universities of Munich and Freiberg. Subsequently he traveled in West Africa and the West Indies making natural history collections. In 1860 he returned to Rochester where he was professor at the University of Rochester until 1865. In Rochester he founded Ward's Natural Science a pioneer enterprise of its kind which collected specimens from all parts of the world and then mounted and sold them to colleges and museums. In 1897 he married a widow Lydia Avery Coonley 1845-1924 president of the Chicago Woman's Club in 1895-96 who wrote Under the Pines and other Verses 1895; Singing Verses for Children 1897; Love Songs 1898. He died on July 4 1906 after being struck by an automobile in Buffalo New York becoming Buffalo's first automobile related fatality. His ashes were interred in Mount Hope Cemetery amongst a large boulder he found in Georgian Bay Ontario Canada until they were stolen. Ward's brain was contributed to the Wilder Brain Collection at Cornell University. Rochester Historical Society hardcover

réf. A9780252041372Hardback. New. J. Blake Perkins searches for the roots of rural defiance in the Ozarks--and discovers how it changed over time. Eschewing generalities Perkins focuses on the experiences and attitudes of rural people themselves as they interacted with government in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He uncovers the reasons local disputes and uneven access to government power fostered markedly different reactions by hill people as time went by. Resistance in the earlier period sprang from upland small farmers' conflicts with capitalist elites who held the local levers of federal power. But as industry and agribusiness displaced family farms after World War II a conservative cohort of town business elites local political officials and Midwestern immigrants arose from the region's new low-wage union-averse economy. As Perkins argues this modern anti-government conservatism bore little resemblance to the populist backcountry populism of an earlier age but had much in common with the movement elsewhere. hardcover

réf. B9780262518901Paperback / softback. New. Active Vision explores important themes emerging from the active vision paradigm which has only recently become an established area of machine vision. In four parts the contributions look in turn at tracking control of vision heads geometric and task planning and architectures and applications presenting research that marks a turning point for both the tasks and the processes of computer vision. The eighteen chapters in Active Vision draw on traditional work in computer vision over the last two decades particularly in the use of concepts of geometrical modeling and optical flow; however they also concentrate on relatively new areas such as control theory recursive statistical filtering and dynamical modeling. Active Vision documents a change in emphasis one that is based on the premise that an observer human or computer may be able to understand a visual environment more effectively and efficiently if the sensor interacts with that environment moving through and around it culling information selectively and analyzing visual sensory data purposefully in order to answer specific queries posed by the observer. This method is in marked contrast to the more conventional passive approach to computer vision where the camera is supposed to take in the whole scene attempting to make sense of all that it sees. paperback
