1991réf. 22151London: British Railways Board 1991. Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued. HE SPENT A LIFETIME TELLING CHILDREN STORIES-THIS TIME HE HOPED THEY WOULD LIVE TO TELL THEIR OWN. Roald Dahl's Guide to Railway Safety is among the most unexpected publications associated with the celebrated author. Prepared from a manuscript Dahl completed before his death and published posthumously by the British Railways Board it transforms a government safety campaign into something unmistakably Dahl: witty mischievous slightly outrageous and impossible to ignore. Never offered through the book trade it was distributed directly to British primary schools in this modest stapled format. Rather than issuing stern commands Dahl dispenses advice with the dry humor and exaggerated storytelling that made him one of Britain's best-loved children's authors. Children are warned against skateboards on station platforms dangling heads from train windows and countless other catastrophes-not through fear alone but through unforgettable anecdotes delivered with a wink. Quentin Blake's wonderfully expressive illustrations complete the illusion that this is simply another Dahl story rather than an official safety booklet. His loose energetic drawings soften the seriousness without diminishing the danger creating a uniquely British collaboration in which wit black humor and public safety travel happily on the same train. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Original full-color illustrated stapled wraps. 5.75 by 8.25 inches approximately 15 x 21 cm. 24 pages. Profusely illustrated throughout in color by Quentin Blake. Printed on coated stock. Rear cover bears the British Rail "Safety" logo. Published by the British Railways Board and produced by Michael Benn & Associates. Designed by Clinton Banbury and printed by Hunterprint Group Plc. CONDITION: Very Good. Stapled binding remains secure. Pages are clean with light handling wear and gentle age-toning. Covers show mild rubbing a few small handling marks and light corner wear consistent with careful use. No ownership writing or markings were found. A bright attractive example of a booklet that was originally intended for classroom distribution rather than long-term preservation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - A Literary Voice for Public Safety During the late twentieth century British Rail increasingly turned to nationally recognized figures to communicate safety messages to young audiences. This booklet represents one of the most successful examples of that effort pairing Roald Dahl's accessible storytelling with Quentin Blake's distinctive illustrations to encourage safer behavior around railways. Published shortly after Dahl's death it preserves one of his final contributions outside traditional children's publishing and illustrates how literary talent was employed in public education campaigns during the period.
