Original vellum-backed buckram lettered in gilt to spine with both the original glassine underwrapper and the printed dustwrapper. Decorated endpapers. The glassine wrapper with a short tear to upper board; the dustwrapper a little chipped at head of both boards and slightly foxed - but nevertheless far better than is usually encountered. A limited edition with a note by British bibliographer and surgeon Sir Geoffrey Keynes 1887-1982 of a choice edition of Milton's hymn 'On the Morning of Christ's Nativity' with six designs by William Blake which 'have never been reproduced'; 'Each of the drawings bears Blakes signature and the majority are dated 1809. It was in this year that Blake held his exhibition of pictures in Golden Square but the designs for Milton's Hymn were not among the exhibits. Probably the drawings were bought very shortly after they were done by Thomas Butts Blake's most generous patron at that period. They were still in the Butts collection when a portion of it was sold at Sotheby's on March 26 1852 the six drawings then realising £6. 12s. 6d.' . Limited edition no. 6 of 150. Quarto. 1947Best.-Nr. 6515New York and London: Studio Publications 1947. First Thus. Folio of Loose Prints in Printed Wrappers. Very Good. William Blake. Folio. Nine loose prints comprising Blake's illustrations for Milton's Paradise Lost measuring 13 x 17 inches along with a one-sheet introduction by Henry Rossiter. Each print with a caption. Prints with a mere suggestion of edge-wear; the introductory sheet and three prints with light marginal stains not affecting type or images. Withal a well preserved set. While "genius" has lost value through hackneyed application it applies most aptly to both William Blake and John Milton. For Blake to be so moved by Milton's work that he interpreted his poesy with the watercolors reprinted here was provident: untold generations have been inspired by his sublime and idiosyncratic imagination. The prints are readily frameable. A scarce set especially in this condition. Studio Publications unknown
