1839réf. 368615London: W. Pickering . and W. Newbery 1839. First letterpress edition issue without "The Little Vagabond. xxi iii 74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Full green morocco gilt. Fine copy. Circular gilt vellum label of William Twopeny. First letterpress edition issue without "The Little Vagabond". xxi iii 74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The first letterpress edition of Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience preceded only by the small number of copies of the illuminated first edition engraved and colored by Blake. With a laudatory Preface by the Swedenborgian James John Garth Wilkinson 1812-99 who edited and arranged the present volume for publication. Wilkinson worked from Charles Augustus Tulk's copy of the illuminated first edition c.1795-1807; Tulk had previously lent his copy to Coleridge. The work appears in two issues with or without a poem entitled "The Little Vagabound" at page 71 which was supposedly canceled by the editor out of prudishness. No priority has been established Both issues appear with about equal frequency which is to say not often. Keynes 135; Bentley & Nurmi 161B; Bentley Blake Books 171 W. Pickering ... and W. 1868réf. 1052531868. London: Pickering 1868. Small 8vo xiv 112 pp. and 8 pp. of ads at the front. Original cloth red printed paper backstrip label darkened some pencil annotations in the text. A very good copy. Ink signature at front of Wm. C. Pritchard. § New edition taken largely from the 1866 edition with some slight changes including an expanded preface and two more poems. Although a typographic issue of the Songs had appeared in 1839 and Gilchrist and Rossetti had included them in the 1863 biography neither of those versions were faithful to Blake's original text with Rossetti in particular standing accused of efforts at "improvement". The editor of this edition Richard Herne Shepherd gives for the first time in accessible form the exact text of Blake's idiosyncratic engraved publications of 1789 and 1794 only twenty-two complete copies of each of which survive though omitting lines from "Mary" and from "Auguries of Innocence" which contained the word "whore". The additional poems two of them previously unpublished are printed from Blake's original manuscripts. Bentley Blake Books 335 B. unknown books

ABOUT THIS BOOK: The core of William Blake's vision his greatness as one of the British Romantics is most fully expressed in his Illuminated Books masterworks of art and text intertwined and mutually enriching. In 1949 the William Blake Trust was founded to bring these rare in some cases unique works to a wider general audience through the publication of superbly produced facsimiles of each book. By the late 1980's these facsimiles had themselves become rare books. The Trust accordingly resolved to initiate a collected edition that would publish accurate reproductions of all the Illuminated Books to be accompanied by notes and commentaries by leading Blake scholars. Songs of Innocence and of Experience one of the best known of the books is now reproduced for the first time from the King's College Cambridge copy--sometimes known as "Blake's own copy." The poems have been edited with introduction notes commentaries and bibliography. Publisher. The William Blake Trust/Princeton University Press hardcover books
