FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 148 pp. ; 66 ills. -- with a bonus offer--; The English poet and artist William Blake 1757-1827 was uncommonly aware of the evils of slavery in his time having illustrated Narrative of a Five Year's Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam 1791 John Stedman's firsthand account of the brutal suppression of a slave revolt in South America. But for Blake the interest was not only in physical but mental enslavement. The ubiquity of "mind-forg'd manacles" as he put it in his great poem "London" in a rapidly industrializing Europe compelled some of his most dramatic and complex text and images. With over 60 color reproductions from Blake's illuminated books watercolors and engravings all from the collection of The British Museum William Blake and Slavery: Mind-forg'd Manacles presents a strong statement on this great artist's pungent and independent political vision. It includes an essay on the theme of slavery in Blake's visual imagery by the exhibition curator and leading Blake scholar David Bindman as well as a text on Olaudah Equiano an African ex-slave who campaigned for the abolition of slavery by the novelist and literary critic Darryl Pinckney. This book commemorates both the bicentennial anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire and the two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of Blake's birth. . 2007. 1853322598 . 1922ref. 89590Oxford: Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press 1922. First Limited Edition. No. 8 of 650 numbered copies. This a presentation copy from the Duke & Duchess of Hamilton to "Mr. & Mrs. Alington" inscribed on half-title: "For Mr. & Mrs. Alington / with grateful thanks for the loving care given to Malcolm & David / from the Duke & Duchess of Hamilton" dated 1926. Also with the later undated ownership signature of prominent Scottish poet and Blake scholar Ruthven Todd. Folio ca. 20" x 15"; original maroon cloth with gilt spine and cover titles; 215pp text 64 unnumbered leaves of plates printed both sides six in color. Contents complete and fine; mild external wear and soil still a handsome Near Fine copy in the publisher's binding. These designs by Blake never published were originally in the possession Blake's close friend the artist John Flaxman 1755-1826; in 1828 Flaxman's estate was sold by Christie's at which time the drawings made their way into the trade then eventually into the library of Hamilton Palace. Through a happy accident the drawings were not dispersed with the palace library in 1882 and remained undiscovered until the estate's tragic dismantling in 1922. In conjunction with the Duke and Duchess Grierson commissioned the reproductions and saw the current work into print adding a keenly perceptive essay on the drawings' history and their place in the evolution of Blake's technique. Though not certain the presentation to "Mr. and Mrs. Alington" is almost certainly to Charles Alington founder of the Labrador Retriever Club in 1920 of which the Duchess was a charter member a champion breeder and an expert on field trials and judging. The Duchess Hamilton was herself a major figure in the field trial world winning the premier championship in 1909 with her Labrador bitch Dungavel Phoebe. She was also a major force for animal welfare co-founding in 1906 the Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society. A distinguished copy of a work that appears infrequently in commerce. We note no other presentation copies in the auction record; the Todd provenance is a very nice addition indeed. Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press unknown

ref. 127126Princeton: The William Blake Trust / Princeton University Press 1993. Large 4to 286 pp including 72 pages of illustrations. Original cloth pictorial dust-jackets. § The fifth volume in this series of Blake's illuminated books edited overall by David Bindman one of the premier Blake scholars. "In an introductory essay the editors directly address the nature of the poem's complexity and demonstrate how Blake's methods set out to disconcert conventional concepts of time space and human identity. The editors also present plate by plate commentary on how the illustrations contribute to the creation of a composite visual-verbal style. The extensive notes will assist readers through Milton its central themes and its byway its heights and depths. Milton is a difficult and cryptic poem.and scholars will find much new information in this volume. The editors describe the experimental graphic techniques Blake used in Milton and uncover the multiple layers of revision he lavished on the copy reproduced here. The introduction and notes offer fresh insights into the difficult relationship between Blake and his patron William Hayley that in turn shaped Blake's sense of his great predecessor John Milton himself and the role he would play in Milton the text" blurb. SHORT DESCRIPTION Year: 1925Edition: Nonesuch Press edition; complete in three volumesPublisher: The Nonesuch Press 16 Great James Street London DESCRIPTION BLAKE William. The Writings of William Blake. Edited in Three Volumes by Geoffrey Keynes. London: The Nonesuch Press 1925. Three volumes. nA handsome complete three-volume Nonesuch Press edition of the writings of William Blake edited by the distinguished Blake scholar and bibliographer Geoffrey Keynes. nThe set is attractively produced in the characteristic manner of the early Nonesuch Press bound in vellum-backed marbled boards with gilt lettering to the spines and retaining broad uncut margins. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of Blake's work including a striking portrait after the life mask made by Deville in 1823 and reproductions of Blake's visionary designs. nThe bindings show the natural toning marking and surface variation associated with vellum with some rubbing and wear visible to the extremities. Internally the volumes present well with the substantial handmade-style paper and generous typography giving the set considerable presence. nA desirable combination of Blake Geoffrey Keynes and the Nonesuch Press bringing together literary importance scholarship and fine press book production. STORY Few figures in English culture unite poetry and visual art as completely as William Blake. Poet engraver painter and visionary Blake created an intensely personal imaginative world that was only gradually recognised as one of the great achievements of the Romantic age. This 1925 edition occupies an important place in the twentieth-century rediscovery of Blake. Its editor Geoffrey Keynes became one of the foremost Blake scholars and bibliographers of his generation helping establish reliable texts and a clearer understanding of Blake's extraordinarily complicated body of work. The choice of the Nonesuch Press was particularly appropriate. Founded only a few years earlier Nonesuch sought to combine the traditions of the private press with the technical capabilities of commercial printing. The resulting books are celebrated for typography paper illustration and design without abandoning the practical form of the printed book. Here Blake's writings are given the physical treatment they deserve: three substantial volumes generous margins marbled boards vellum spines and illustrations drawn from his artistic legacy. It is not simply an edition of Blake's writings but an artefact from the period in which Blake's reputation was being firmly established for a modern readership. WHY THIS MATTERS This set has several strong collecting points: William Blake — one of the defining figures of British Romanticism. Geoffrey Keynes — among the most important twentieth-century Blake scholars. Nonesuch Press — one of the most collectable British private/fine presses of the twentieth century. Complete three-volume set. Attractive vellum-backed marbled bindings. Illustrated with reproductions of Blake's art including the memorable image taken from his 1823 life mask. A substantial and visually impressive edition suitable for both a serious Blake collection and a fine-press library. CURRENT DESCRIPTION Complete set in three volumes.
