ONE OF THE BEST EARLY PERIOD COLLECTIONS OF COLERIDGE POETRY. A very pleasant printing of Coleridge's works which includes his Juvenile Poems Kubla Khan The Pains of Sleep Sibylline Leaves Christabel Miscellaneous Poems and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner as well as others. This is an early published edition of the works and is quite a pleasing copy. Coleridge wrote the ballad “Christabel” a tale of spiritual seduction in a medieval castle as an experiment in English poetry at the encouragement of his good friend Wordsworth. "Kubla Khan" an unfinished poem was composed according to Coleridge in an opium-induced sleep and is to some extent a precursor to symbolism and surrealism. Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772 – 1834 English poet literary critic philosopher and theologian who was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets with his friend William Wordsworth. He also shared volumes and collaborated with Charles Lamb Robert Southey and Charles Lloyd. Along with The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and "Kubla Khan" also wrote a major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical works were highly influential especially in relation to William Shakespeare and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to England. Coleridge coined many words and phrases from the obscure theological term "sterilifidianism" to the familiar "suspension of disbelief" the avoidance of critical thinking to follow a narrative. He was also an important influence on Ralph Waldo Emerson and the beginnings of American transcendentalism because of his unique interpretation of Immanuel Kant's concept of intuition which he outlined in both Biographia Literaria and Aids to Reflection.
