First edition first impression of the Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece. The Golden Notebook centres on Anna Wulf a writer who is attempting to unify the four fragmented notebooks in which she has compartmentalised her life into a single 'golden' volume. Lessing's inspiration for the novel arose out of a desire to write a book about the act of writing itself. Initially she resisted this ambition feeling as though the trope had been overworked but over time she realised her individual approach could render it entirely new. With an explicit focus on the position of women in society Lessing explores wider societal breakdown through the mental break Anna is experiencing. Written at the dawn of second-wave feminism the work resonates with the era's emergent discourses on sexual liberation and the women's movement. hardcover

1962Best.-Nr. BB1611London: Michael Joseph 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Impression of the Nobel laureates "indispensable" masterpiece significant "as the most massive statement made up to that time on the position of woman in the modern world." Burgess. Tall thick 8vo: 568pp. Publisher's black boards spine lettered in gilt; first-issue typographic dust jacket photograph of Lessing to rear panel designed by William Belcher priced 30s. About Fine dust-soiled edges mild offsetting to end papers square tight probably unread; about Fine jacket lightly dust soiled back panel several edge nicks still vibrant and bright. Time 100. Burgess 99. p.86. NYPL Books of the Century p.130. Callil and Toibin 52. "Anna Wulf is a writer who keeps four notebooks each a different color each reflecting a different part of her. The black one contains recollections of her youthful wartime years in West Africa . . . In the red one she reflects on her later life in Londons leftist and intellectual circles. The blue notebook analyzes her fraught relations with men. The yellow contains her fragmentary attempts at new fiction. With the fifth the golden notebook and with The Golden Notebook Wulf/Lessing struggles to tie all the threads fearlessly back together again. All the currents of her time flow through AnnaMarx and Freud and the burgeoning dissatisfactions among women that would eventually explode into feminism. Lessings earnestness can be too much at times but as a portrait of a woman coming to grips with the realities of her time her book is indispensable." Time 100 N. B. The central publications of the controversy that erupted when Lessing published 'fragments' of the work of Hermann Samuel Reimarus that attacked Lutheran orthodoxy and argued for a rational deism rejecting the theology of revelation. This led to an exchange of polemical pamphlets between Lessing and the principle defender of Lutheranism Johann Melchior Goeze a pastor from Hamburg. These culminated in Lessing's 11 'Anti-Goeze' tracts that contain the seeds of his thoughts regarding religion that became the foundation of 'Nathan the Wise.' The so-called Fragmentes Dispute is considered the most important theological controversy of the 18th century pitting Lessing's Enlightenment philosophy against Lutheran orthodoxy.
