1952ref. 30735New York: Random House. Very Good in Good dj. c.1952. First Edition. Hardcover. light dampstaining along rear joint bleed-through from jacket stain no other significant wear; the jacket is decent-looking on front and rear panels but the spine is stained and discolored with a small pull-tear. B&W photographs "The first non-musical hit of the season" reads the first jacket blurb -- so of course when Hollywood got around to it the first thing they thought was "hey this thing could really use some songs!" Not a bad decision though since the resulting film managed to not only get past the censors who were concerned because lovely young Gigi was after all "in training" to be a high-class courtesan but also to take home the "Best Picture" Oscar for 1958. The novel was originally published in 1944 and had been filmed in France in 1948. The Broadway version made a star of Audrey Hepburn who is featured in all three of the photographs in this edition and on the paper label affixed to the front cover but of course they hadda get a real French girl Leslie Caron for the movie. This was a review copy and has the original publisher's slip laid in; from the collection of longtime New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther. . Random House hardcover books
1963ref. 2347325London: The Folio Society 1963. First Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 0x0x0. Jullian Philippe. First thus Ford-Smith Folio 76 #180. Includes publisher's slipcase. Fore edge lightly foxed. 1963 Hard Cover. 160 pp. Red and black cloth imitating silk gilt titles. Translated from the original French into English by Roger Senhouse with seven collotype plates from dry-point etchings by Philippe Jullian. Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette 1873 - 1954 one of the most popular and best loved of modern French writers became known simply as Colette when she married in 1893. Her husband a Parisian man-about-town and the son of a major publisher made use of her literary talents by publishing her first several novels under his own name - his only changes evidently being to make them more prurient. But eventually she broke free of this unhappy marriage and took flight on her own as a fiction writer a journalist and an actress. By the time Cheri was published in 1920 Colette had become well known both as a writer and as a personality and was entering a period of rich personal growth and happiness.
