1975réf. 73642Bloomington & London: Indiana University Press 1975. 8vo pp. 10 566; transcriptions and translations of musical notation throughout; original full green cloth; fine. "The subject matter of this study consists of a Tibetan liturgical songbook presented in its entirety and of a second work a 'textbook' of which a small part is shown. The reason for considering two manuscripts is that they differ considerably in organization and presentation of textual and notational materials and in the way they are used by the Masters of the Chant" introduction. "An investigation into the musical aspects of Tibetan chant always a complex undertaking has become practically impossible in recent years because under the new rulers of the land the religious practices of the Tibetan Buddhists the monasteries libraries and the chant itself have ceased to exist. Therefore this book is not much more than attempt to rescue some parts of a musical art that is about to disappear" preface. Indiana University Press unknown books

1881réf. 28016777Boston: A.P. Ordway & Co 1881. Very good to fine; toned some light wear to wrappers. Published in 1881 this booklet offers its reader detailed descriptions of different diseases while also advertising Kaufmann's Sulphur Bitters a "family" patent medicine that claims to treat and cure everything from headaches and rheumatism to kidney disease and Malaria. The booklet begins with a short biography of Kaufmann and his advice on caring for the sick vaccination "Always be sure that the vaccine is obtained from the cow" p. 4 and diet; following these are over fifty pages of advice for specific diseases. For each Kaufmann discusses the cause symptoms and treatment or cure where applicable. Examples include scabies flatulence bad breath pimples measles diabetes and syphilis. There is also a lengthy section titled "Dr. Kaufmann's Half-Hour Talk with Females" pp. 8-11 which discusses women's health and how his Bitters can cure everything from painful menstruation to amenorrhea; he also asserts later in the booklet that it is "perfectly safe" to take his medicine during pregnancy p. 13. Mental health is discussed under the headings "The Blues" p. 35 and "Hysteria" p. 56; unsurprisingly he attributes hysteria to "menstrual irregularities" which again can be cured with his Sulphuric Bitters. Stapled in original printed wrappers 8" by 5" pp. 72 with 3 colored plates and several smaller in-text illustrations. A.P. Ordway & Co unknown books

Schneider Corresponding Secretary; and Conrad Schweitzer Treasurer. An early German-American organization whose Constitution emphasizes the necessity of "Union and concert of action" to enhance "the general welfare." It derives its legitimacy from the Declaration of Independence and announces the "Absolute equality of innate human rights." The founders determine to organize "themselves into a band of brothers pledged unto one another to be faithful unto death declaring 'in Union there is strength'." Despite the suggestions of an early industrial trade union in what would become the Nation's industrial heartland the Union purports to elevate the whole person-- encouraging the pursuit of knowledge reining in government encroachments and spending and insisting that government is the servant of the people. Peter Kaufmann who appears to have been the prime mover of the organization was a Canton author almanac-maker bookseller publisher and clearly of an entrepreneurial bent. OCLC 17342629 6.
