The Rise of an American Architecture: A Book and an Exhibition Contents of the Exhibition Texts from the Exhibition by Edgar Kaufmann Jr. Edgar Kaufmann Jr. April 9 1910 - July 31 1989 was an American architect lecturer author and an adjunct professor of architecture and art history at Columbia University. After reading Frank Lloyd Wright's autobiography Kaufmann decided to become a resident apprentice in architecture at Wright's Taliesin East School and Studio from 1933 to 1934. When he left Wright's Taliesin Fellowship in 1935 he joined the family business and became merchandise manager for home furnishings and in 1938 was elected secretary of the Kaufmann Department Stores Inc. In 1940 he left Kaufmann's to join the Museum of Modern Art. He was director of the Industrial Design Department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He authored several books on Wright architecture and modern design and was a contributor to Arts Architecture journal and Encyclopædia Britannica. Vincent Joseph Scully Jr. August 21 1920 - November 30 2017 was an American art historian who was a Sterling Professor of the History of Art in Architecture at Yale University and the author of several books on the subject. Architect Philip Johnson once described Scully as "the most influential architectural teacher ever." His lectures at Yale were known to attract casual visitors and packed houses and regularly received standing ovations. He was also the distinguished visiting professor in architecture at the University of Miami. Prof. Albert Fein was a historian and an authority on the work of the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Professor Fein was chairman of the urban studies department at Long Island University where he had taught since 1958. He had also been a visiting professor at Harvard and the City University Graduate Center. Architectural historian and professor Dr. Winston R. Weisman was born February 3 1909 in New York City compiled extensive pictorial documentation to support several areas of his research: cast-iron architecture origins of the skyscraper and commercial architecture in New York City including the Soho district Rockefeller Center and buildings by architect George B. Post. His interest in research date from his 1939 dissertation on Rockefeller Center. He did most of his subsequent research as professor and head of the Department of Art History at the Pennsylvania State University where he specialized in the history of commercial architecture. He dedicated 22 years to teaching at Penn State from 1958 to 1971. Henry-Russell Hitchcock 1903-1987 was an American architectural historian and for many years a professor at Smith College and New York University. His writings helped to define the characteristics of modernist architecture. From a review by Wayne Andrews of Wayne State University From the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography located on the Internet: Professor Vincent Scully Jr. of Yale is pointing out that there is always more than one solution to every problem and that what is damned in one generation may be admired in the next. This flexibility is evident throughout his essay in which he manages to say a great deal in next to no space. To turn from Scully to Albert Fein's "The American City: The Ideal and the Real" is to venture into a world where moral principles are more important. Professor Fein has given us a long lecture on the social fervor of certain nineteenth-century Unitarians. No one not even an Episcopalian could object to this. But when the lecture is over the reader is bound to discover that a lot of city planning has been neglected. For example D. H. Burnham's great Chicago Plan is buried in a somewhat hasty dismissal of the City Beautiful movement. Those who are used to thinking of the skyscraper as the expression of the steel frame may be amazed by the patience with which Winston Weisman lingers over certain business buildings of New York. And the "seven chapters on phases" of skyscraper history one of which is admittedly a "pre-skyscraper phase" add to our understanding of the subject. Henry-Russell Hitchcock's paper on "American Influence Abroad" is something else. Thanks to his extensive reading of foreign periodicals Hitchcock has come up with a number of facts of particular interest. As an example of American publishing it stands in a class by itself.
