1969ref. 001473New York: Knopf 1969 1969 Cloth. First Edition First Impression. Signed by Author. Cheever has SIGNED this first edition on the front endpaper. A major novel located in familiar Cheever country. Book is clean and tight with a previous owner's inscription on the half title. The binding is square and tight but there is a hint of lean to the spine and the top edge of the cloth is a tiny bit sunned. The corners are unbumped. The text block has a nice untrimmed leading edge. The valuable mark here is of course the author's signature. One cannot fathom men's motive's and this pair probably believed in what they were up to. What they did not believe in was representative government. They believed in government by an uncontrolled oligarchy whose acts would only become apparent after an interval so long that the electorate would be forever incapable of doing anything efficient to remedy depredations." - Ezra Pound, from Introduction.
