18513 vols., sm. 8vo., with engraved portrait frontispiece and title-vignettes, small neat signature on front free endpaper of first volume, some light and inoffensive age-staining to first few leaves; original blue pebble-grain cloth, backstrips with printed paper labels (lightly browned but entirely unworn), uncut, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean set. WITH THE FINE NINETEENTH CENTURY ENGRAVED ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE OF HENRY WILLIAM POWNALL ON FRONT PASTE-DOWNS. With 4pp. publisher's catalogue bound in at end at first volume. Aldine Poets, vols. 13, 14, 15 respectively. The Aldine issue of Pope was first published in 1831 (see NCBEL II, 502). This extremely unusual trade card for the firm of E. Brandsma in Amsterdam dealers in tea seems to be a VERY EARLY EXAMPLE OF TRANSLUCENT PLASTIC. Alexander Parkes developed a product the first thermoplastic in the 1850's by treating cellulose with nitric acid to form a transparent and elastic material know then as Parkesine. Parkesine was patented in 1856 and unveiled at the 1862 Great Exhibition. Parkes attempted to develop it commercially but failed due to the high cost and general production difficulties. It was usually produced in rectangular plaques such as here.
