8vo. (28), 186, (10) pp. Woodcut initials. 19th century marbled boards. All edges red. The Norman copy of the first edition thus, very rare, containing "most of [Paracelsus's] innovations in chemical therapeutics" (Garrison/M.). Paracelsus (ca. 1493-1541) was a key member of the German Renaissance and a pioneer of the medical revolution. He was interested in chemistry, hermeticism, and toxicology alongside and in conjunction with his medical theories, and overturned much of the accepted wisdom of medicine in the West. In doing so, he "rebelled against ancient humoral pathology, which held that all disease resulted from an imbalance of bodily humors, by stating that each disease was a specific entity caused by an agent outside the body" (Norman). The "Septem libri de gradibus", first published in slightly different form in 1562, is one of his most essential works. - Covers lightly rubbed, otherwise in good condition. Provenance: from the Wellcome Library (withdrawn stamp on title verso) and the Norman collection with Haskell F. Norman's printed bookplate. VD 16, P 450. Sudhoff 98. Durling 3480. Wellcome I, 4765. 4to (270 x 180mm), [6]pp., with introduction followed by 40 ff. in exact facsimile, one of 250 copies, a very good ex-library copy, orig. vellum-backed boards, vellum label on upper cover, uncut.
4to (150 x 208 mm). XCIII, (6) ff. Late 19th century half vellum over papered boards with author's name and publication date stamped to spine in gilt. A fine post-incunable from the press of Wilhelm Schaffner from Rapperswyl, famous for having printed the first edition of the "Hortulus animae" in 1498. All of his productions are rare. The present collection of sermons had first appeared in 1501. - The eighteen essays, which form a single treatise, warn the various classes of human society to guard against sin in its many forms. "Much of this is the common, dry stuff of scholasticism, but several passages prove that the author cannot have been lacking in the gift of wit when he preached from the pulpit. Among these paragraphs is the fourth, directed against wives, widows, and virgins: some women (writes Morgenstern) will beautify themselves when they visit public houses or other places where they may meet strangers, and say they do so only to please their husband. Yet this is but a lie, for when they return home, they will remove their jewelry and sit by their husband like a hairy night owl, caring little about their adornment" (R. Cruel, Geschichte der deutschen Predigt im Mittelalter [1879], p. 569 ff., also citing several methods how women are said to contrive to obtain beautiful objects at their lovers' expense). - Spine a little duststained. Interior shows light worming, more pronounced near the end. Lower corner of fol. G5 torn away without loss to text; a more substantial edge defect to final leaf of index remargined (likewise without loss to printed text, but some loss to contemporary manuscript notes in Latin on blank verso). A final blank leaf has been appended, using old paper. A contemporary annotation to fol. a5v. In all a good copy. - Provenance: from the library of the noted economist Oskar Morgenstern (1902-77), whose purchase of the volume (probably prior to his emigration in 1938) may have been occasioned by the author's name. In collaboration with the mathematician John von Neumann, the German-born Morgenstern, who taught at Princeton University, founded the mathematical field of game theory and its application to economics. Contemporary blindstamped dark-brown calf binding over wooden boards; pastedowns made of a 13th c. vellum ms. with fleuronnée initials. Fine Sammelband, containing the very scarce first edition of Peutinger's work dealing with the old borders of Gaul and Germania. Under the heading "De Lusitanis nautis qui in Indiam navigant", Peutinger discusses the travels of his fellow Augsburg citizens to the East Indies. Also includes poems by Sebastian Brant and Ringmann Philesius. - The volume contains four additional early prints: II: The work of the Roman geographer Gaius Julius Solinus (3rd c.). "The greater part of this work is taken from Pliny's 'Natural History' and Mela's 'Cosmographia'. It was revised in the sixth century under the title of 'Polyhistor'. It was a popular work in the middle ages" (Cox II, 336). - III: Rare Petit edition (ed. P. Phoenix) of the oldest preserved Roman geographical work. - IV: First edition of this Roman history to be printed in the German-spaking countries. - V: Rare edition of Bruni's history of the Gothic Wars. - Occasional insignificant waterstaining to inner margin; upper margin of first 10 ff. have small brownstain. Spine and clasps replaced; back cover shows traces of a nail, proving this to be a former chain binding. Folio (224 x 318 mm). 255 unnumbered ff. (last blank). Gothic type, 2 cols., 46 lines. Rubricated throughout. With title border painted in red and orange, large initial "S" in several colours with pretty flower and tenril designs, red colophone border and numerous red and blue initials. Contemp. blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards with 2 metal clasps (wants fittings). Ms. spine label. Probably the editio princeps of this collection of homiletic samples by Martin von Troppau (d. after 22 June 1278), rubricated and with pretty initials throughout. The alleged earlier edition cited by Hain, supposedly printed in Strasbourg in 1480 (H 10853), appears to be a ghost. - Martinus Polonus (also known as Martin von Troppau or Martinus Oppaviensis) is regarded as one of the most respected chroniclers of the Middle Ages. - Some 6 ff. remargined at bottom, 2 more leaves show loss to corners. Somewhat browned and brownstained; several contemporary marginalia. Worming to beginning and end (touching text in final third). Binding rubbed and bumped; defect to back cover and numerous wormholes. The pretty Gothic blindstamping shows hunting scenes, floral designs, and the Agnus Dei (not recorded in Schunke, Schwenke collection). Splendid hand-painted armorial bookplate of Wolfgang Crener von Sulzbach (fl. c. 1510), a scholar of canon law; several later ownership entries, stamps, bookplate. Hain 10854. Goff M-329. GW M 21433. Christoph Schwarz" to title page and notes to final flyleaf. Wants first flyleaf; upper pastedown shows traces of a removed bookplate. Some browning; corners wrinkled; a few thumb indexes torn out.
