In the opening pages of this volume contains the Proceedings in the Supreme Court of the United States in Memory of Justice Stewart Monday October 20 1986. The resolutions presented during the proceedings by Solicitor General Charles Fried formally codified Justice Stewart's 23-year influence on American law into the official permanent record of the Supreme Court. The proceedings historical text captures the specific attributes that defined his career. The proceedings famously highlight Stewart's rejection of ideological labels. When asked by a journalist how he classified himself politically the record notes his historic reply: "I like to be thought of as a lawyer." The speeches preserved in Volume 479 celebrate his foundational contributions. This includes his defense of the press in Branzburg v. Hayes his crucial swing votes on the death penalty Furman v. Georgia and his famous Fourth Amendment declaration that the Constitution "protects people not places". The most prominent landmark decisions in this volume include: Constitutional & Election Law: - Federal Election Commission v. Massachusetts Citizens for Life Inc. 479 U.S. 238 - Tashjian v. Republican Party of Connecticut 479 U.S. 208 Labor & Civil Rights: - California Federal Savings & Loan Association v. Guerra 479 U.S. 272 Criminal Procedure & Constitutional Law: - Colorado v. 1858ref. 822591858. London: Barnett Printer Highgate c.1858. London: Barnett Printer Highgate c.1858. An Interesting Piece of Printing History Broadside. Trial and Sentcnce sic of Dr Barnard This Day Guilty Transported for Life. London: Barnett Printer Highgate c.1858. 9-3/4" x 7-1/2" broadside mounted to later backing sheet. Moderate toning faint residue and small tears to corners from former mounting text affected at lower left and upper right corners loss to one word of text and to final letter of "and" in title "D" carefully filled in with ink. $1250. Riddled with printing errors and stock phrases this broadside provides an excellent example of the economical and often generic nature of this kind of popular literature. References to the "unfortuuate sic and illfated victim" the "cold and wanton murder" the "dissipated and irregular habits" which led to the crime and of course the "authenticity of the important information" this broadside contains would have all been familiar to contemporary readers but the text contains no real details of any particular crime. The printer may have sought to capitalize on the high-profile trial of French surgeon Simon Francois Bernard one of the conspirators in the 1858 Orsini plot to assassinate Napoleon III. This broadside also demonstrates the readiness with which printers of popular material imitated each other's work. The only other known broadside printed by Barnett has the conveniently generic caption title Full Particulars of this Dreadful Murder! and text seemingly identical to that of this broadside. At least two other broadsides we located published by London printers T. Rigdon and J. Lucksway have identical text under the Full Particulars title. This is a rare item. Egelhoff 532 U.S. 141 2001 is a major decision of the Supreme Court of the United States on federalism specifically with regards to the preemption powers of federal law over state laws. Lawrence v. Texas 539 U.S. 558 2003 was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that sanctions of criminal punishment for those who commit sodomy are unconstitutional. The Court reaffirmed the concept of a "right to privacy" that earlier cases such as Roe v. Wade had found the U.S. Constitution provides even though it is not explicitly enumerated.3 The Court based its ruling on the notions of personal autonomy to define one's own relationships and of American traditions of non-interference with private sexual decisions between consenting adults. unknown books
