1922ref. 003801Constable 1922 Gorgeous first edition of this celebrated book by Walter De La Mare. The book is greatly enhanced by the illustrations of Dorothy Lathrop. Coloured frontispiece lovely gilt designed blue buckram cover. Beautiful collectable. No jacket but perhaps there was none issued. The cover boards are age worn but firm; the corners are not bumped; there are one or two tiny marks through use here and there; the spine is secure but a bit soft at the top and bottom; the gilt design and titling on the front board still glitters but is slightly faded on the spine; the end papers are clean not written on and are not cracked; there is very little foxing probably because the publisher has used decent smooth art paper for a quality job like this. The text block is gilt topped and untrimmed at the base which again adds quality. Nobody has spilt anything underlined anything or turned down any corners. 0.0 0.0 0.0. Very good book without dust jacket. A tight clean copy nevertheless with a sunned spine. Gilt titling has therefore faded a bit. Soft corners and a bit foxed inside as is usual. The text block is gilt on the trimmed top edge other edges are handsomely ragged. Very much a collectable despite my description. 4to (280 x 205 mm), [44]pp., title-page and text printed in red and black, wood engraved headpieces and vignette tailpiece, cont. full red morocco, gilt, a little rubbed. The poem exists complete in two sixteenth-century paper manuscripts, Trinity College Cambridge MS R. 3. 15 and British Library MS Bibl. Reg. 18. B. XVII; in a fragment, British Library MS Harley 78 (fol. 3r); and in a black-letter edition (London, Reyner Wolfe, 1553) from which this reprint is taken. Provenance: Engraved bookplate of Edward Johnson with his crest stamped in gilt on both upper and lower covers.
[26]pp., stitched as issued. Edward Backhouse was born in Darlington on 8 May 1808, but lived for most of his life in Sunderland, where he was a partner, but not an active one, in the family colliery and banking businesses. He was a member of the Society of Friends and devoted himself to philanthropic and religious causes. A good amateur printer and painter, he was also interested in natural history, and illustrated several works written by his second cousin James. Backhouse married Katherine Mounsey in 1855. The couple had no children. He died in Hastings, where he had gone for his health, on May 22, 1879. The work Backhouse carried out on church history was published posthumously. The first 11 pages consist of "Abstract of the English Reigns, from the Conquest", this having its own title-page. This is then followed by several pieces of verse by family members.
First Dublin Edition, no half-title, with the final advertisement leaf, 62 [2]pp., disbound. Father Bougeant was born at Quimper in Brittany, in 1690. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1706, taught classics in the College of Caen and Nevers and lived for a number of years in Paris until his death in 1743. His "Amusement Philosophique sur le Language des Bestes," published in 1737, became a cause of considerable embarrassment to him, and resulted in a brief exile from Paris. The work was controversial in that it considered whether animals had a soul and a language, and if this could be viewed as a sign of reason. He approaches this subject and reduces it to an absurd one, concluding that it does not represent a threat to religion and grants souls to animals which would inhabit their bodies like a punishment.

8vo, 30, [2 blank]pp., lightly waterstained throughout, orig. drab paper wrappers, bound in patterned paper boards. First edition of a fascinating early monograph on printed signatures, foliation, registers and catch-words in 15th-century books. It is dedicated to the great Belgian collector Charles van Hulthem. Count Serna, who is here given the timely title of "Citoyen", was an important incunabulist and printing historian. He correctly attributes the first use of signatures to Johann Koelhoff the elder in Nider's Praeceptorium 1472, and of foliation to Arnold Ther Hoernen in Adrianus Carthusiensis' De remediis utriusque fortunae 1471. He agrees with Marolles (Recherches sur l'origine et le premier usage des registres 1783) that Sweynheym and Pannartz were the first printers to employ a register [the table in the 1469 Caesar], but it is now thought that the anonymous Hieronymus' Epistolae [Rome: probably Sixtus Riessinger, c. 1468--69] may be the first book to have been issued with one. The author rightly identifies Vindelinus de Spira (and not his brother Johannes) as the printer of Tacitus' Opera [now assigned a somewhat later date than Haebler's 1471], the first printed book with catch-words. Provenance: Bookplate of A. W. Barten. Bigmore & Wyman II, 352.

I of "Principia," with introduction and list of plates, 16pp.; index to vol. 3 of Principia, 13 leaves; 8 plates, slight spotting, with the bookplate of C.W. Loscombe, presented by Sotheby in acknowledgement of the assistance he had obtained in books lent from Loscombe in compiling this work, cont. half morocco, rubbed. Bigmore & Wyman II, 373-74. "The copies of the 'Principia' were not published in the ordinary way, but offered to the trade by Messrs. Sotheby & Co., at public auction, the upset price being nine guineas each copy. They were all disposed of in two hours." This specimen book was compiled from the remaining sheets of his 'Principia Typographica' and issued as a prospectus in conjunction with the 1858 auction.
