1880An outstanding, beautiful, and unusual production by Louys Glady, an underestimated yet key figure in the British Fine Press Movement. XX, 1, 111 pp. PRINTED THROUGHOUT IN RED AND GREEN. The text is printed in red with the punctuation in green--an extremely impressive accomplishment, as anyone who has used a handpress will attest. From a total edition of 303 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 15 COPIES PRINTED ON EXTREMELY FINE WHATMAN LAID PAPER. 8vo. Bound in original art vellum, also printed in red and green. Light wear to binding, internally UNCUT, BRIGHT, AND FINE. Extremely rare.

1878AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN COLOR PRINTING. Two volumes, complete. A remarkable catalogue of a remarkable collection. Odell focused on bibliography, books about books, history of printing and the graphic arts, and fine printing, at a time when few American collectors were interested in these areas. Books in these categories account for well over half of the 2,434 lots. There is also a wide selection of extremely rare books in other areas, especially the occult, including incunables and a few highly important medieval manuscripts. The catalogue itself is notable for two reasons. First, there are the precise, knowledgeable, and extensive descriptions, with numerous references to specialized bibliographies: most American book catalogues of this period give the barest information about the items at hand. Second, this is certainly the most lavishly-produced American book auction catalogue of the 19th century. It was beautifully printed on fine laid paper, with numerous engraved initials, headpieces, and tailpieces. VOLUME I OF THE PRESENT SET IS FROM THE DELUXE ISSUE, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES PRINTED PRIMARILY FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION, with the initials, headpieces, and tailpieces printed in different colors. The sets of this deluxe issue that reached the market were sold for $10 each, a colossal price when we consider that lot 1462, a copy of Bodoni's 1818 Manuale Tipografico, sold for $4.50! Volume II is from the regular issue, and is NEATLY PRICED THROUGHOUT in a contemporary hand. Title-pages printed in red and black. Facsimiles. 4to. Volume I is ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE, uncut, unopened, unsewn, unstabbed, and unglued, loosely laid into original wraps (light soiling to wraps). Volume II in bound in half leather and marbled boards, with original wraps bound in (binding somewhat worn at extremities). Both volumes internally FINE, AND BRIGHT. Complete sets are extremely rare (volume II is especially scarce). Not in Bigmore & Wyman or Taylor.
1562(16) SS. Hand foliiert (305-312). Adams S 212. Edit 16, CNCE 52440. Pettas (The Giunti of Florence) 240. Parenti 447. Nicht bei BM-STC Italian.

He played a pivotal role in several 5th century Byzantine Church controversies that led to various ecumenical acts and schisms and is considered "one of the principal Greek writers of the 5th century" (Tusc. Lex. Lit., p. 254). - Light browning and staining (more pronounced in first and last leaf). A few contemporary annotations. VD 16, T 768. Hoffmann I, 495. Graesse VI.2, 118. OCLC 54244694.

First Edition in English, small 4to, typographical device on title, title recto [A], verso blank, [2], 41, [1] pp., modern half calf, a good copy. "The political satire against the Duc des Luynes, according to Barbier, was the cause of the author's imprisonment in the Bastille where he died. The bibliography of the early French editions, as in the case of the more celebrated Menippean satire, does not appear to have been studied so that it would be difficult to say with just what celerity it was translated and published in English. However, the fact that it was translated is not necessarily an indication of the concern of Jacobean England with the internal affairs of France. Although this translation may have been in part intended as a commentary upon Buckingham and other 'favourites' of the King's Council, it was probably published principally because of its intrinsic wit and vigor." - Pforzheimer Library. ref. 102515Nancy Imageries réunies de Jarville-Nancy n.d. early twentieth century Complete set of 14 stencil-coloured lithographies numbered I - XIV. Size c. 28 x 41 cm. Traces of staples at the top margin. A lovely clean set with bright colours. The illustrations are signed with the initials v.H. The fourteen plates show the stations of the cross. The illustrations are all set within an architectural border with the tetramorph in the corners the Four Evangelists in animal form with Matthew depicted as a man Mark as a lion Luke as a bull and John as an eagle. For over a century the eastern part of France was the centre of production for these prints and hundreds of people worked in the printing houses. The best known are prints from Epinal but thetr were also the printing houses of Metz Narcy-Jarville Point-à-Mousson Strasbourg and Wissembourg. These popular prints were produced as cheaply as possible in very large numbers and were destined for children and adults with modest means. The prints were coloured to make them more attractive but this also had to be done cheaply so stencil colouring was used. As we see in our copy very bright colours were used to make the prints stand out in the dark interiors of modest househoulds. Due to their nature they give a good view of the life of normal people at the time. They were very fragile and not many survived so they have now become quite scarce.
