"Probably the earliest [British] topographical book with its text lithographed... the most striking feature of the book is the discrepancy between the assurance of the writing of the main text and the naivety of the drawings..."?Twyman, Early Lithographed Books, pp. 179-180. Twyman suggests that Charlotte Grimston (wife of the first earl of Verulam who owned Gorhambury) was responsible for the views and plans, but employed a professional lithographic writer for the text. 1785ref. 24331Paris: Renouard n.d. 1785. Large 8vo 29 by 20.5 cm in handsome antique three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards the spine ornately gilt lettered and decorated. 167 leaves printed on one side only. A very pleasing copy internally very fine and fresh the binding with some light expected evidence of age. A VERY BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED WORK. The reproduction of the drawings was a real challenge entrusted by Ambroise Vollard to the care of the Imprimerie Nationale and to the skill of the eighty craftsmen who shared the work under the direction of Tony Beltrand. The work appeared without a publication slipcase: the copies are generally bound and such a copy in sheets and in very good condition has become rare. 1867ref. 711New York: American Bible Society 1867. 3/4 cloth. Very Good . 12 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Folio. 1 872 974 leaves. Printed in raised letters for the blind. Tears to upper margin of front endpapers and edges lightly soiled. Bound in contemporary 3/4 black leather and black cloth which is worn at edges. A scarce early American edition of its kind. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries several decades before the widespread adoption of Braille printers and educators in France and Britain began developing a variety of tactile reading systems for the visually impaired making independent reading among the blind possible for the first time in history. The results of an important competition at the Royal Society of Arts in Edinburgh in 1832 inspired the American activist Samuel Gridley Howe to research and develop his own embossed reading system for the blind which emerged in 1835 as "Boston Line Type." Drawing upon the methods of James Gall an entrant in the Edinburgh competition Howe created an alphabet of angular raised roman letters that "was said to be far less bulky and therefore less expensive than contemporary European roman-letter systems" PRINTING HISTORY p. 20. With the aid of a $1000 grant from the American Bible Society Howe purchased the first printing press for the New England Institution for the Education of the Blind today the Perkins School for the Blind and produced the country's first complete raised-letter Bible for the American Bible Society in 1842. The present Book of Psalms appears to have been printed with the first complete Howe-ABS Bible retaining the pagination of that production and was published separately with a new title page. ABS had published Selections of Psalms in 1835 and the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind a Psalms and Hymns in 1840 and 1848 this is a very early edition of the Psalms. Central worm-track to final seven mentioned works with loss of text and sense in places. A sammelband of fourteen late sixteenth- early seventeenth-century Dutch-language pamphlets primarily concerning the administration of the city of Antwerp. The articles on customary law encompass the duties of city officials including burgomasters and justices of the peace; the conduct of criminal trials and implementation of torture; citizens’ rights including those of bastards and unmarried women; and contracts relating to property and trade. Two of the pamphlets are of particular note; firstly Artiickelen van het bestant ghesloten ende gheconcludeert voor XII a record of the proclamation of the Treaty of Antwerp issued in 1609 which initiated the Twelve Years' Peace an armistice between the Netherlands and Spain in the midst of the Eighty Years' War.; and secondly Articulen Ende Conditien vanden Tractate an official text of the condition of the 1585 surrender of Antwerp to Spanish condottiero Aleesandro Farnese following a lengthy siege. . 1588Small 8vo. 4 parts in one volume. VIII, 285, (3) ff. With medallion portrait (legend: "D. Petrus Aretinus Flagellum Principum") on title (repeated three times). 19th c. calf (slightly worn). Pirated edition of Aretino's "comedie" (the first appeared 1553 in Venice) printed by one of the most rebellious and outspoken of all the Elizabethan printers. Wolfe's production was in all probability chiefly destined for the European continent, as all of Aretino's works had been on the Roman Index since 1558; copies were offered for sale at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1589. Aretino's comedies are considered the best of his works. They rank among the great works of Renaissance drama, and many of their leading characters were prototypes for later playwrights. ‘La Talanta’, for example, prepared the way for Shakespeare’s character Falstaff. "[U]n frontespizo particolare ad ogni comedia [...] ha al fine una Lettera dell'Aretino a Daniele Barbaro" (Gamba). - One gathering misbound, but a nice complete copy. Edit 16, CNCE 2486.
