Folio. 140 ff. With four-part woodcut border and 10 woodcuts in the text, as well as several woodcut initials. Later half vellum with marbled covers and ms. title to spine. Pretty edition of Seneca's tragedies, edited by Girolamo Avanzi, Gellio Bernardino Marmitta, and Daniel Caietanus. "Reproduces the 1510 edition" (cf. Schweiger). "Texte encadré par le commentaire [...] Page du titre: encadrement ornemental avec fond de hachures obliques et figures de deux daupins affrontés sur les côtés. - Dans le texte: dix vignettes d'une taille rude et grossière" (Essling). The dolphins (four of them, in fact) are cleverly hidden within the ornaments of the woodcut border. Each play is prefixed by an unsophisticated, but prettily designed Renaissance woodcut. A few interspersions in an appealingly cut Greek type. - Slight edge tear to f. 16. Some wrinkling to gutter throughout. Faded 17th century ownership to title page. Some fingerstaining to margins early on, otherwise a very clean and crisp copy from the collection of the steel industrialist Giacomo Galtarossa (b. 1916), president of the Associazione industriali della provincia di Verona (his etched bookplate on front pastedown). BM-STC Italian 621. Essling II, 209, 1691. Schweiger II.2, 938. OCLC 38721121. Not in Adams.

Folio. 136 leaves. 17th century calf (rebacked). Latin translation of an Arabic treatise on simple drugs, traditionally attributed to "Pseudo-Serapion" (or Serapion the Younger), but recently identified as the "Kitab al-adwiya almufrada" (Book on Simple Drugs) by Ibn Wafid (d. 1067), a pharmacologist and physician from Toledo. Ibn Al-Wafid was a man of immense knowledge in all medical matters and therapeutics, with the skills to treat grave and insidious diseases and affliction. He preferred dietetic measures; if drugs were needed, he gave precedence to the simplest ones over compound drugs, and among these, he recommended the least complex, to be used only sparingly and in the lowest dosage possible. While the original Arabic version of the book is considered lost, a manuscript written in Hebrew-Arabic as well as partial translations in Latin and Catalan are preserved. This translation was prepared around 1290 by Simon Januensis (Simon of Genoa) and Abraham ben Shem-Tob of Tortosa. Very rare: a single copy in postwar auction records (Sotheby's, 1977: £1500). 8vo, 30, [2 blank]pp., lightly waterstained throughout, orig. drab paper wrappers, bound in patterned paper boards. First edition of a fascinating early monograph on printed signatures, foliation, registers and catch-words in 15th-century books. It is dedicated to the great Belgian collector Charles van Hulthem. Count Serna, who is here given the timely title of "Citoyen", was an important incunabulist and printing historian. He correctly attributes the first use of signatures to Johann Koelhoff the elder in Nider's Praeceptorium 1472, and of foliation to Arnold Ther Hoernen in Adrianus Carthusiensis' De remediis utriusque fortunae 1471. He agrees with Marolles (Recherches sur l'origine et le premier usage des registres 1783) that Sweynheym and Pannartz were the first printers to employ a register [the table in the 1469 Caesar], but it is now thought that the anonymous Hieronymus' Epistolae [Rome: probably Sixtus Riessinger, c. 1468--69] may be the first book to have been issued with one. The author rightly identifies Vindelinus de Spira (and not his brother Johannes) as the printer of Tacitus' Opera [now assigned a somewhat later date than Haebler's 1471], the first printed book with catch-words. Provenance: Bookplate of A. W. Barten. Bigmore & Wyman II, 352.

During his stay abroad he became intimate with Curran, Grattan, and other prominent Irishmen, including his cousin, William Conyngham Plunket, afterward lord-chancellor of Ireland. On his return to the U.S. he settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and was active in state and local politics. 196160p. Printed in red and black. Remarkable black endpapers printed with a black and red mask. 8vo. Original full black cloth binding lettered in gold, and with Shakespeare's autograph embossed in blind on the front board. The original black slipcase is worn at extremities. Designed by Meyer Wagman. Small Limited Edition, but no statement of number. Kurt Hans Volk (1884-1962) was born in Germany, and probably trained as a printer/typographer there. He worked for many years at N.W. Ayers in Philadelphia before starting his own typographic firm in 1927. He widely lectured on advertising typography and authored the important work: "Using Type Correctly." He greatest influence as a designer was probably as a consultant to the Merganthaler Linotype Company. Today he is probably best known for a private series of keepsakes and limited edition books distributed to friends at Christmas. We are pleased to be able to offer one of last of these here. Fine books from earlier Christmas seasons make great gifts today. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! CHRISTMAS/W67
