First Edition, 15,[1]pp., disbound, margins a little chipped and fragile, water stain to lower outer corner. This modest proposal involves reclaiming land on the Isle of Man and establishing a college for children of the upper class, for a "religious, a moral, and a liberal education, in a salubrious climate, and removed from the more general scenes of dissipation...". But an offshoot of this private school was to be a sort of academy for Manxmen, who were born mariners, and whose contributions and expected benefits Hillary cites in detail. Cubbon, Literature of the Isle of Man, p.101, listed as "Not in Library"; Copac locates the British Library copy only.

194519 p. + Frontis and text illustrations. 12mo. Original full cloth binding, stamped in gold. Original dust jacket. Privately printed for George Zabriskie as a Christmas greeting presented to Mrs. (David) Van Dusen, signed by Zabriskie. From a paper originally presented at the New York Historical Society. George Albert Zabriskie (1860-1954) was President of the New York Historical Society from 1939-1947, and Honorary President from 1948 until his death in 1954. He was a great enthusiast of fine books and book binding, and an expert amateur hand-tooler and finisher of books. Though he lived in New York City, he "wintered" in Florida, and issued these charming Christmas keepsakes from his home: "The Doldrums" a Mission-Spanish Revival residence designed by Albert Pierce. A bright copy of a nice little keepsake. W69

Hullmandel's best know work and most influential publication is his book 'The art of drawing on stone' which was first published in 1824. But in terms of establishing lithography in Britain, his translation from the French of this treatise by Raucourt de Charleville was probably just as important. This third and final edition contains some important new additions. Colonel Antoine Raucourt was chief engineer at the Ecole des Ponts et Chauss?es in Paris and ran its in-plant lithographic press. His book was originally published in Toulon in 1819. Hullmandel thought highly of Raucourt's treatise and wrote in the preface: "The books which have hitherto been published on lithography are very imperfect, and are much more adapted to persons who already understand the art than those who wish to learn it... I have repeatedly wished for a guide to explain the new accidents which occur every instant, and which... appear each time so new and intricate, that the beginner is consequently tempted to give up all hopes of ever succeeding. I am consequently better enabled to appreciate the value of this excellent treatise on lithography, and hesitate not an instant to pronounce it the best work which has ever been published on the art." Bigmore & Wyman II, p.240; Twyman, pp.110-14.

1963ref. 80429Dublin Republic of Ireland: Wood Printing Works Ltd 1963. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. 32 pages. Foreword by Sean F. Lemass. Small chips missing to dust jacket edges. Some text in Gaelic. This bookwith over twenty full color reproductions is a complete historical record of John F. Kennedy's visit to Ireland. All the highlights of his visit the happy and intimate as well as the formal and impressive are fully described with a wealth of background information also included. All his speeches are recorded in full as are many of the witty asides with which he delighted all who heard him. In short this book recaptures the atmosphere of those four short summer days when the whole Irish people poured forth their hearts in waves of love and respect in what was tragically to prove their opportunity of seeing this great man. As Sean Lemass says in his foreword this book "will be cherished as a memento by Irish people at home and abroad." The Emerald Isle welcomed Kennedy America's first Irish Catholic President like a returning son. Thousands lined the streets to welcome the young leader as his motorcade cruised its way through the streets of Dublin. In typically whimsical fashion Kennedy began his introductory speech by saying: "It took 115 years to make this trip and six thousand miles and three generations." He was of course referring to his Irish roots where the President's great grandfather had fled The Great Famine sailing from New Ross Co. Wexford just a few miles from the Kennedy family home to America's east coast. During his visit Kennedy traveling without a heavily pregnant Jackie met with Irish President Eamon de Valera as well his wife Sinead who recited a poem about emigration and exile that would ultimately stay with Kennedy for a long time. The poem read: "'Tis the Shannon's brightly glancing stream brightly gleaming silent in the morning beam. Oh! The sight entrancing. Thus return from travels long years of exile years of pain to see Old Shannon's face again o'er the waters glancing." So impressed was JFK that he incorporated the words in his final speech before departing from Shannon. "Well I am going to come back and see old Shannon's face again and I am taking as I go back to America all of you with me" he said. Before he left though he dropped in on his Irish cousin Mary Ryan who held a garden-party for him in the grounds of their ancestral home. In typical Irish mammy fashion Mrs. Ryan gave her famous relative a warm welcome but couldn't be doing with all the Secret Service protocol and Presidential red-tape. She walked right up to Kennedy to give him a kiss hello - which is usually a big no-no after JFK cut a ceremonial cake she demanded that he give her the first slice and when the President informed his cousin that he had to leave she responded by saying: "Oh you're not going yet." Sadly he would never return nor see old Shannon's face again as months later he was assassinated in Dallas. But the impact of his visit still resonates with Irish people. Kennedy helped to publicize and legitimize the strong link between America and Ireland which still exists to this day. Wood Printing Works, Ltd hardcover
