Folio (189 x 290 mm). XVI, (1) pp. With large woodcut title illustration and 6 woodcut illustrations in the text, all by Jost Amman. Modern marbled boards with cloth spine, new endpapers. All edges red. Second independent edition of this "short account of the manner how towns, castles, and other places are to be garrisoned with soldiers in such a way that they may withstand the enemy". Formerly attributed erroneously to Fronsperger's "Kriegßbuch", from which Amman's fine title woodcut was taken, the treatise was first published privately in 1560 as the 8th volume of the monumental military encyclopedia by the imperial field marshal and fortification architect Reinhard count Solms (1491-1562); Feyerabend issued it separately in 1563. The text woodcuts show siege engines and instruments. - Leaves XIII and XIIII transposed. Colophon leaf repaired at foot and spotted. - Provenance: the library of Heinrich Stiebel, Frankfurt (his bookplate on pastedown, numbered 5272). Later in the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research (purchased from Sotheran's, December 1936). 1989ref. ABE-2483402199Chatto & Windus 1989 Extremely RARE SIGNED FIRST PRINTING of the second volume of Holroyd's masterpiece. The first printings are pretty rare anyway but a signed one is truly scarce. NOT A LIBRARY COPY. Not remaindered. In fact this Near Fine hardback looks to be unread although there is one tiny nick at the very base of the spine which could be a manufacturing fault. The binding is beautiful beneath the jacket the gilt signature of Bernard Shaw is bright the spine is unbroken and the bright blue and gold title rectangle is superb. The book is in a protected Fine unclipped jacket and the elusive signature is directly written boldly without a message on the title page. An unusual book perfect for the collector. All edges gilt. Hardbound. A very good copy of a scarce little work. After studying with the Jesuits and teaching in their colleges at Clermont and Toulouse, Marmontel (1723-1799), acting on the advice of Voltaire, set out for Paris (at the age of twenty-two) to seek literary fame. He wrote a series of minor plays which brought him somewhat permanent admission to Parisian literary and social circles. It was during this time that he wrote articles for the 'Encyclopedie' on the 'Elements of Literature' which still rank among the French classics. In 1758 he gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour. She obtained for him a place as a civil servant, and the management of the journal, 'Le Mercure' where his charming 'Contes Moraux' were first printed. Fist published in 1767, 'Belisare' was a historical romance loosely based on the career of Belisarius (505-565) a Byzantine general under the Emperor Justinian I. He was constantly called upon to defend a fading empire (and the very gates of Rome) against the Persians, Vandals, Goths, Ostrogoths, and Huns. It included a chapter on religious toleration which incurred the censure of the Sorbonne and the Archbishop of Paris. Because of this reaction to his work Marmontel became even more firmly set against the excesses of religious and political fanaticism. Quite scarce. FRENCH 4
