Eight documents - manuscripts a photograph typed letter signed etc. 1893 - 1899; various sizes - generally minor wear - in very good or better condition. Reverend Edward F. Strickland was a pioneer of the Socialist Movement in Michigan and a major figure in early 20th-century American radicalism. He would run multiple times on the Socialist ticket for U.S. Representative from Michigan's 4th Congressional District Michigan's 2nd Judicial Circuit Court Judge and Michigan State Senate for the 7th District. He was also a prolific collector of books and historical manuscripts his collection of material related to women trailblazers in suffrage work as well as prominent female authors artists and lawyers is currently housed at the Schlesinger Library. Apparently interested in businessman inventor and the 44th Governor of Vermont Levi Knight Fuller 1841 - 1896 - Strickland assembled the current small group of items which included an autographed and dated card a personal letter by Fuller's wife Abby after the governor's death together with a short paragraph written earlier by Fuller himself a typed letter by Vermont's Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs George M. Hogan a cabinet card and several cutouts from books and periodicals all related to Fuller. Perhaps the most interesting were the two manuscript letters sent by Abby Fuller. Strickland had written to her requesting "something of her husband's writing" after the governor's death. She in turn responded with a lovely letter explaining that she was enclosing a "letter.evidently jotted down for further use" of her husband's perhaps part of a public speech draft. It stated in part: "The towns of Vermont are miniature republics each having a voice on the basis of its own independance and not upon numbers of inhabitants having one voice for the municipality rather than a diversity of opinions based upon subdivision of towns." The typed and signed letter by Vermont's Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs George M. Hogan read: "In compliance with your recent request I am pleased to transmit herewith an impression on wafer of the Great Seal of the State of Vermont." - with the abovementioned seal splendidly executed in gilt and affixed to the lower margin of the letter. Founded on September 12 1753 as a literary and debating society Linonia was the first organized non-athletic activity at Yale the second-oldest student organization at the school and the oldest surviving literary and debating society of its era. As the college curriculum was quite inflexible the society gave undergraduates the opportunity to participate in philosophical debates to present essays etc. Known for their fierce rivalry with their sister society the Brothers in Unity the two organizations would compete in amassing substantial book libraries togehter one of the largest independent book collections in early America in order to combat the heavy restrictions and rigidity of Yales official college library and to allow access to modern literature fiction and history. With the demise of both groups in 1871 - their collections would be donated to the university where they would form the foundation for Yale's present day library system. Of the current collection the largest we have seen outside of institutional holdings nine of the documents featured disputations and essays on various philosophical moral and political subjects including "Is the right of civil government founded in compact" "Is learning productive of happiness" "Ought a parent to have the right of disinheriting his children" "The benefits of the discovery of America" "Can suicide be justified" "Were the scriptures written by divine inspiration" and so on. Two of them had notes proclaiming: "Read before the Linonian Society June 11th 1795" and "Read before the S.ociety February the 4th." While some of the papers were unsigned a few beared the names of distinguished Yale alumni and Linonia members including Philo Hale and Deacon Joseph Wright - the latter father of several subsequent Yale graduates including Rev. William S. Wright Class of 1843 and Rev. James L. Wright Class of 1832. Philo Hale 17851847 was the second cousin of Revolutionary War hero and spy for the Continental Army Nathan Hale. A significant figure in his own right after graduating from Yale Philo would go on to become a prominent pioneer and land speculator after whom the village of Philo Illinois would be named. The last paper was a personal letter by Rev. Ephraim Treadwell Woodruff 1777 - 1859 - Yale graduate of 1797 the first ordained pastor of the Church of Christ in North Coventry Connecticut the first settled pastor of the entire Western Reserve of Ohio New Connecticut and a cousin of the 4th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Wilford Woodruff. Jerome Kern 1885-1945 is best known as a pioneering American composer who transformed musical theatre by integrating songs into coherent plots. He famously composed the 1927 masterpiece Show Boat and its enduring standards like "Ol' Man River" and wrote hundreds of pop and jazz hits for the Great American Songbook. Kern's contributions span both Broadway and Hollywood shaping the structure of the modern musical. Throughout his career Kern composed over 700 songs used in more than 100 stage and film works. Many of his compositions transcend their original contexts and are celebrated jazz and pop standards. During the teens and 1920s Kern composed for countless stage shows. Once Hollywood found its voice during the 1930s and 1940s Kern shifted to Hollywood composing iconic soundtracks for movie musicals. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for others and is considered one of the most celebrated figures in the history of American popular music. The great American writer and public intellectual Gore Vidal 1925-2012 was known for his cynical epigrammatic wit. His novels and essays criticized the social and sexual norms he perceived as driving American life. While fiercely progressive his traditionalist streak and elitist literary sensibilities sometimes led him to call himself a "small-r conservative" in the classical sense. He passionately wanted to "conserve" the original constitutional republic and hated what he saw as the decay of traditional American institutions free speech and personal liberty. Wikipedia Five are portraits; some include Vidal at work dated between 1960 and 1975; at work and in social situations between 1957 and 1970 including with Cyril Ritchard on Visit to a Small Planet; at the premiere of Romulus; with Edie Adams at opening of The Best Man in 1964; with the cast of Weekend in 1970; and on a Laugh-In TV special in 1978.
