1890ref. 82214Leipzig; Paris: Friedrich Boigt; Albert Berger; Chamuel etc. 1890's. 21cm. The whole bound in a functional dark brown cloth titled in white to spine. Some wear to the cloth cosmetic fraying to spine ends and some general wear a good solid binding performing a practical rather than aesthetic function. A rather complex little collection with two German pamphlets on cartomancy and fortune telling being duodecimo sized and the two subsequent works; a German pamphlet on magnetic healing and a French work on mesmerism being octavo. Tight and strong but perhaps a little unbalanced through necessity. Contents: 1. "Wahresagekunst The Art of Divination.aus den Linien der Hand. Die Kunst des Karteschlagens und Träume richtig zu deuten." Leipzig; Friedrich Boigt's Buchhandlung. c.1880's. Stated tenth edition. Publisher's illustrated yellow paper wraps with a hand-colored image of an elderly woman reading cards and a woman's palm simultaneously to expressions of shock and dismay from the two respectable ladies present. Some wear to the extremities of the wraps and the whole has been annotated and doodled on in pencil with notes crossings out and astrological symbols in the margins. The paper quality is pretty appalling and is heavily toned. Illustrated throughout with small in text engravings of palmistry guides and with the latter half of the pamphlet instructing how to incorporate cartomancy into the divinatory process with an extensive list of possible dream permutations and their symbolic meaning. An interesting little work that uncomfortably straddles the border of fortune telling as party trick and as occult divinatory art with the additional psychological foray into the interpretation of dreams and the acknowledgement of a symbolic subconscious. 2. "Das Karteshlagen oder die kunst sich selbst und Anderen aus der Deutschen un Französischen Karte." Leipzig; Verlag der Ernst'schen Buchhandlung. 1880's. Publisher's grey paper wraps titled and decorated in black with manicules!. 60pp. Some shallow scuffing and chipping to the wraps a very good example internally clean with the page edges a little ragged due to some clumsy opening. Internally clean although our pencil wielding devotee of the occult has made some small assaults into this work. Cartomancy and Cheiromancy presented as complimentary arts of divination with colour illustrations of card types as a frontispiece and numerous interior diagrams of palm lines and potential card layouts there also seems to be an emphasis on ambience and a certain showmanship bringing the suggestive psychological elements back into the mix and placing the varied schools represented in this sammelband back into a sort of shambling thematic order. 3. "Die Heilmethode des Lebensmagnetismus nebst einer Untersuchung uber den Unterschied zwischen hypnotismus und heilmagnetismus von H.R. Paul Schroeder." 1895. Leipzig: Verlag von Albert Berger. Stated Third Edition. 144pp. Publisher's yellow wraps titled and decorated in black. Some soiling and light wear pinhole of loss to the lower edge of the front wrap and the ownership or possibly bookseller's ink stamp of the mesmeric practitioner himself Herr Schroeder of Leipzig to the front cover. Internally clean although heavily toned due to the cheapest of paper being used. A third expanded and revised edition of Schroeder's work originally published in 1890 with case notes and accounts of treatments and responses CRABTREE 1279. Schroeder's major contribution to the annals of mesmerism and magnetism was the 1899 publication of one of the best and most comprehensive histories of the Mesmeric phenomenon. 4. "Les états Profonds de L'Hypnose." DE ROCHAS Albert. Paris: Chamuel. 1896. Stated Fourth Edition. Publisher's cream colored wraps titled in black and red. 119pp. Some marginal soiling and toning mostly due to cheap paper. Internally clean. De Rochas features rarely amongst the annals of mesmerism and hypnosis but his work was diligent and popular when published with this particular work being a companion to the earlier work The Superficial States of Hypnosis. "The rigorous notation of the phenomena observed by the author and the numerous citations of the experiments made by him make this work as valuable as a document. It constitutes in addition and outside of the occult didactic part a bundle of indisputable proofs." Caillet referring to the first edition. 82214. Press photos with attached printed snipes; five back-stamped "AGIP Michael Cohen" the sixth stamped "A.D.P. / Agence Diffusion Presse"; the snapshots are unidentified though each bears pencil annotations on verso in an unknown hand. Some curling to the press photos with typical soil to versos; some minor chemical staining from processing else minimal creasing and wear; Very Good or better. An attractive and interesting grouping of images all capturing Baker towards the end of her performing career. The press photos are of Baker at a variety of events in the early-to-mid Fifties including four in performing costume. The snapshots in three of which Baker appears look to have been taken at some outdoor festival at which Baker was a featured guest also circa mid-1950s - possibly a reunion of French Resistance fighters as one of the spectators may be seen wearing the characteristic doubled-cross armband of the maquis. unknown books

Essentially all of the relevant literature for a two day course on student protests on US campuses divided into three sections detailed in the text: "The Campus During Crisis" discussing the roles of the faculty the legality of police involvement in campus protests the role of student leaders etc.; "The Campus After Crisis" with particular focus on the Kent State atrocity the makeup of post demonstration tribunals and hearing committees and a comparison of student rules regarding protest from the perspective of the campus and when the "rules" are organized from the perspective of the students the test case here is contributed by the students of UC Berkeley; and the final part "The Aftermath of Crisis" which contains an article entitled "Universities and Political Involvement: A Tentative Agenda" alongside sections detailing the Free Speech policies of a number of prominent US universities and colleges the legality of demonstration at various institutions and a clear inference that campus authorities regularly break the law and behave unconstitutionally when suppressing students exercising their rights to free speech and assembly on the sites set aside for this purpose. 54 years old at the date of cataloging this academic and extremely considered and detailed text suggests that nothing changes but it stays the same and that few democratic rights survive their first encounter with aggressive institutional self interest. Iskusstvo Trudiaschimsia was a weekly review of revolutionary art and performance produced under the auspices of the Science and Art Section of the State Academic Council under the directorship of the important revolutionary apparatchik theorist and avant-garde playwright Anatoly Lunacharsky whose important theoretical essay "Is it Not Time to Organize the Glaviskusstvo" appears in the magazine's third issue. Perhaps not surprisingly given the Lunacharsky connection content is heavily focused on the performing arts including theater music and cinema: Lunacharsky believed that of all forms of artistic expression theater had the greatest potential for the education and radicalization of the proletariat. The plastic arts are considered as well but far less frequently. A good idea of the overall focus of Iskusstvo trudiaschimsia can be gotten by scanning the contents of the third issue: in addition to the aforementioned Lunacharsky essay on the establishment of a state arts directorate Glaviskusstvo would eventually be established in 1928 there appears a theoretical essay "Against Aestheticism" by Anatoly Glebov; a discussion by director Ivan Platon of the staging of Turgenev's "Fortune's Fool" at the Maly Theater; a review of V. Nikiforov's play "Airplane" at the State Children's Theatre; an illustrated article on traditional music of the Crimea by the noted musicologist Arkady Konchevsky; and numerous short articles and reviews some signed with initials or pseudonyms others by such figures as A.M. Granovsky Aleksei Rodionov Viktor Krasyn David Shterenberg and others. There are in addition extensive listings for theatrical and orchestral performances film screenings and art exhibitions in Moscow and environs. A significant if short-lived arts journal from the Proletkult period offering valuable insight to the development of revolutionary theatre in the years immediately following the Revolution. Somewhat uncommon in the West with scattered issues appearing on the market infrequently; cohesive runs are rarely offered outside of Russia. OCLC notes only four American institutions with physical holdings all incomplete. unknown books
1933ref. 81752Moscow; New York; Leningrad: Various; Intourist 1933-1966. 90 with a few additional duplicates pieces of ephemeral material ranging from page copiously illustrated tour guides produced in the US on behalf of the USSR tourist initiatives to single sheet recital tickets and programs clearly produced to the lowest costs and standards many of which were not intended to last more than a single occasion. Condition is largely Very Good with a few of the pieces having some wear or damp staining a number of pieces have small "Book Sale" ink stamps presumably pieces that originated in the same collection and were then donated somewhere for sale. A fascinating and varied collection of theatrical and tourist ephemera with much of it originating in one of the most dynamic and experimental periods in Soviet performing arts. "Good intentions do not play a role in art. In art only achievements play a role." A.V. Lunacharski. Intourist was originally formed in 1929 as "Ð’ÑероÑÑийÑкое акционерное общеÑтво по приему иноÑтранных туриÑтов Ð’ÐО «ИнтуриÑт»" which more or less translates as the "All-Russian Joint-Stock Company for the Acceptance of Foreign Tourists". It was far more than a travel agency however controlling as it did almost all tourist access from the West into the USSR and operating on a number of levels to carefully control and curate the view of Soviet Russia that was presented to the rest of the world. The president of Intourist in 1933 Wilhelm Kurz of the Central Committee was the first USSR visitor to be formally accepted by the US when he visited immediately after the nation had been granted recognition. Higher officials in Intourist actually "иноÑтранный туриÑÑ‚" with the popular name simply being a contraction of the Russian language phrasing of "Foreign Tourist" or "Innostrannyy Turist" tended to be secure and solid party officials whose loyalty to the state was rarely questioned the main reason for this being that their interactions with foreign nations and nationals increased the possibility of defection; something Intourist learned early on when their UK representative in London Aron Sheinman declined to return to the Motherland when summoned and became a British citizen in 1939 which was probably rather good timing. Intourist in the 1930's midway through another Soviet Five Year Plan was given the brief to attract wealthy Western culture vultures and businesspeople to the USSR and display to them with astonishing attention to detail how much better the Soviet people were doing than their Western counterparts whilst also planting the seeds for future collaboration. The US was in the midst of the Depression not that the people paying $465 for their trip tickets in 1934 needed to worry much about that but being met from your luxurious "Soviet Ship" and ferried to your Moscow hotel by a fleet of brand new Lincoln town cars for two solid weeks of high culture and fine dining being escorted every step of the way by guides and assistants must have made quite an impression. The number of Americans who could afford a new Lincoln was pretty small at that point and the number who could travel even smaller so the Intourist agenda was aimed to within a minute of accuracy at the Westerners who could do them the most good; the rich the famous and the culturally influential. There's nothing accidental about the Intourist literature being filled with Margaret Bourke White's photographs and commentaries from notable Western culture critics and authorities. Tales abound from the Western tourists able to take advantage of Intourist's services of constant surveillance an absence of any freedom of movement usually disguised by the concept that there was so much to see in the Wonderland of the USSR that wandering off would just mean you missed the best parts and some very strict non-fraternisation policies that only eased off after 1953 when Stalin's strictures against marrying non-Soviet citizens were rolled back. At the height of the Cold War a period parts of this collection span Intourist was essentially an arm of the KGB rather than a tour company; hotels were bugged drivers recorded all conversations the guides reported even the most casual of disclosures to their superiors and no opportunity was lost to gather information on the one hand and disseminate pro-soviet propaganda on the other. Itineraries of Intourist tours for the period show very clearly that even the First Class tourists paying an eye-watering premium were not permitted anything other than the most token periods of 'freedom' with one Moscow-Leningrad tour timetabling only 8 hours of 'unsupervised' time spread across 10 days beginning at 8am and ending at around 11pm. All forms of Soviet culture from collective farm visits to mountain hikes to visits to the Bolshoi served a concrete purpose; to showcase the USSR's successes whilst concealing any of its blemishes. Impromptu hangouts with the actors at the Moscow State Theatre were in fact carefully scripted and choreographed encounters with no dissonant or dissident notes night life was restricted to a carefully chosen list of venues and wherever possible visitors were kept moving from one location to another in quick succession emphasizing the cavalcade of wonders whilst denying any insights that might be gathered by more leisurely viewing. Looking behind the scenery would only result in you seeing more scenery. "in the alternate universe that was the Soviet Union the 'giant squid' of the Soviet state would engulf the traveler. There were myriad ways in which the Soviet tourist monopoly Intourist both hindered the foreigner and shielded him from the vagaries of Soviet material life and above all the psychological costs of 'routine surveillance'. and the barriers the Soviets erected between foreigners and unvarnished and uncomfortable truths about the Soviet Union." Alex Hazanov "Porous Empire; Foreign Visitors and the Post-Stalin Soviet State" University of Pennsylvania 2019. Parts of this collection have some cursory presence in OCLC but the ephemeral nature of the majority of pieces means that their specific representation is largely invisible in US institutions. ref. 47618Various publishers & dates. Extensive photographic archive documenting events on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico Border during the Mexican Revolution focused primarily on the Border Wars in Texas and the Veracruz Incident of 1914 comprised entirely of contemporary images all but a few of which are original vintage prints. The collection includes: • Sixty-one commercially-produced real-photo postcards ca. 14cm x 9cm or the reverse; • Six commercially-printed postcards using non-photographic processes same dimensions; • Three carte-de-visite portraits ca 9cm x 6cm mounted to cards; • Eight small-format photographs ranging from 14cm x 8cm to 11cm x 16cm of which three appear to be commercial images; • Three 8x10 20cm x 25cm photographic prints printed at some later date from original plates but apparently not contemporary; • One vintage 4x6 10cm x 16cm photograph mounted on board. All but a dozen or so images are captioned in the negative and most are additionally captioned in pencil in a later hand on verso. Approximately half the images include no photo credit; of those that do we have identified the following photographers: W.H. Horne D.W. Hoffman Walter P. Hadsell Van Zile & Chalk and L.O. She. Condition is generally Very Good. Two of the photo postcards are damaged with abrasions to significant portions of image area; the remainder show various degrees of edge wear aging and creasing but by and large image quality remains excellent. None of the postcards are postally used though a few include brief contemporary notes on verso. The refusal of Mexican President Porfirio Dîaz to cede power to his rival Francisco Madero in the elections of 1910 resulted in a violent large-scale revolt by campesinos and leftists setting off the thirty-year long Mexican Revolution. American involvement in the conflict began in 1911 when President William H. Taft under the guise of heightening border security moved to back Díaz against the rebels. The resulting mobilization - Taft sent more than 20000 American troops nearly a quarter of all American forces to the Mexican border with especially heavy concentrations in Texas and New Mexico - was to that date the largest mobilization of American military forces in peacetime. At the same time many Americans whose sympathies were not aligned with the Díaz dictatorship including anarchists wobblies Native Americans and more than a few soldiers of fortune went south to fight on the side of the rebels. The resulting border conflict which took place over nearly a decade occasionally pitting American insurrectos against American Federal troops resulted in thousands of Mexican and hundreds of American deaths. The Border Wars reached their climax around the period 1912-1914 which happened to coincide with a near-hysterical vogue for postcards among the American public. The result is that the Mexican Revolution is perhaps the first major armed conflict to have been extensively photo-documented in real time and certainly the first to have had a significant mass audience for that documentation. At least three hundred commercial photographers have been identified in association with the Mexican Revolution and they produced tens of thousands of images ranging from the relatively innocuous e.g. peaceful street and harbor scenes in Veracruz to the horrific lynchings and sidewalk cremations. This entire range of content is represented in the current collection along with portraits of most of the key players on the Mexican side including El Presidente Porfirio Díaz; his primary rival and successor Francisco Madero; Madero's successor by coup Victoriano Huerta; and various military figures including General Juan Navarro Felipe Angeles Ramírez and numerous others. Many of these semi-professional images though produced with commercial intent "professional" remains a guarded term in the context of what was essentially battlefield exploitation photography are valuable for their almost off-hand depictions of violent day-to-day life on the contested border including the casual destruction and acceptance of death from both sides that seemed to define this conflict. Of particular note are numerous of photographs of African-American troops the so-called "Buffalo Soldiers" as well as at least one image depicting Native American soldiers in uniform. Locales represented include Camp Grossmont in California; El Paso and Laredo in Texas and their cross-border sister cities Juarez and Nuevo Laredo; Veracruz site of the American incursion of 1914 known as the "Veracruz Incident"; and various unidentified encampments and battle sites in both Texas and Mexico. A wide-ranging and compelling photographic collection documenting not only a key period in U.S. military diplomacy - one which for better or worse set the tone for American-Mexican relations for the succeeding century - but also a tangible manifestation of the first widespread public incarnation in America of the picture-postcard as a vehicle for both propaganda and photojournalism. unknown books
