It was one of the five treatises Abraham Lincoln recommended to aspiring lawyers and assigned to his apprentices. The final edition the thirteenth was issued in 1886. Roscoe Pound lists it among the treatises "which went far to shape the law" during the nineteenth century. The fifth edition is notable because it was published shortly after the adoption of the Federal Equity Rules which were codified in the late 19th century. Both a descriptive and prescriptive edition it helped shape how judges lawyers and legal scholars understood its effects.
