1828ref. 43184Boston: Hilliard Gray Little and Wilkins. Very Good. First Edition. Removed Document. 8vo; 90 pages; Contents clean and complete; removed document. OCLC 57275590 Amer. Imprints 35420 Sabin 92299. A fascinating examination of the history of the Salem colony with broad treatment of the republican philosophy and institutions that characterized the early development of that and other American settlements forming the underpinnings of the American Republic. Joseph Story 1779 – 1845 was an American lawyer and jurist who served on the Supreme Court of the United States from 1812 to 1845 during the Marshall Court and early Taney Court. He is most remembered for his opinions in Martin v. Hunter's Lessee and The Amistad case and especially for his magisterial Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States first published in 1833. That work is a cornerstone of early American jurisprudence and remains a critical source of historical information about the forming of the American republic. Story was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1810 and a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1814. He would later serve as that society's vice-president from 1831 to 1845. In 1844 he was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society. Justice Story remains one of the most significant figures in early American constitutional history. Selected by President James Madison at the age of 32 Story is still the youngest person ever nominated to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Throughout his time on the Marshall and Taney courts Joseph Story championed the notion of legal science. He believed that the Union could be made stronger through the proper application of law i.e. uniformity of application. Consequently federal control and judicial oversight were important tools in crafting a more centralized Union. . 1828. Hilliard, Gray, Little, and Wilkins unknown

1841ref. 167561841. Women's Educational Movement. Rural Repository News Journal 1841 Poughkeepsie Female Academy Founding Story and Engraving. Large Item. Poughkeepsie Female Academy- Hudson NY. This news journal the "Rural Repository" leads with a full page story on the opening of the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and engravings. More than 30 years later Vassar College would open near the same site. Women's colleges proliferated in the mid- to late- 19th century to fill the void created by their exclusion from most institutions of higher education. The prevailing notion that women were too delicate for a rigorous academic education was openly challenged when Elizabeth Cady Stanton spoke at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 "Man's intellectual superiority cannot be a question until woman has had a fair trial. When we shall have had our colleges our professions our trades for a century a comparison then may be justly instituted." This document predates Seneca Falls by 7 years. unknown

1917ref. 002097London: George G. Harrap & Company 1917. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. London: George G. Harrap & Company 1917. First Edition. Near Fine in Very Good see notes jacket null A real survivor. Book is in near fine condition. PO pencil signature and stamp WWI veteran on title page otherwise clean tight and free of all markings. Acid offseting on the inside front and back covers not spotty just an even tan area toward the inside edges. Boards are fresh and gilt titling is perfectly clear. No splits or rub-trhoughs anywhere on the boards! Incredibly the ninety year-old dustjacket is also present. This is very fragile and will need to be handled by a paper conservationist. The front cover of the dustjacket has a portrait of Edison and has only one closed tear and one chip loose but present neither affecting th primary image at all. The spine has several chips but everything that matters is clear: the title light logo and publisher's name--just one scuff affecting the E in Edison. Back cover is blank and has a couple of small chips and is neatly detached from the rest of the dustjacket along the gutter. George G. Harrap & Company hardcover
