Best.-Nr. 20309Fine. JEAN-LUC PONTY - A PIONEER OF THE ELECTRIC VIOLIN. An original black-and-white performance photograph of French jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty by noted music photographer Tom Copi. Captured in profile Ponty is absorbed in his playing his violin and bow framed against a dark stage background. The close composition and dramatic lighting give the photograph an appealing sense of concentration and movement. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: ORIGINAL CONCERT PHOTOGRAPH. Black-and-white photographic print measuring 10 × 8 inches presented in a navy-blue-colored window mat measuring approximately 13.5 × 10.75 inches. The verso bears Tom Copi's ink copyright stamp dated 1979 with his San Francisco studio address and publication-rights notice. CONDITION: FINE PHOTOGRAPH; NEAR FINE MAT. The photograph appears clean and well preserved with strong tonal contrast and no apparent significant flaws or fading. The mat shows minor handling wear. The photograph is attached to the mat with masking tape along the edges of the verso. The long-term archival stability of this mounting method has not been established. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - THE ELECTRIC VIOLIN IN JAZZ A LEADING FIGURE IN JAZZ FUSION. Jean-Luc Ponty helped establish the violin as a major voice in jazz-rock fusion combining jazz improvisation with the amplified sound and rhythmic energy of rock music. His collaborations with Frank Zappa and John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra brought him international recognition during the 1970s while his solo recordings helped define the sound of the emerging fusion movement. TOM COPI AND THE MUSICIAN IN PERFORMANCE. Tom Copi photographed many of the leading jazz and popular musicians of his era. His concert photography often favored expressive closely observed moments over formal portraiture. This photograph captures Ponty's concentration and physical engagement with his instrument qualities that made him such a distinctive performer.
