1972Decent reading copy of this "slender American classic," as the London Times words it, Brautigan being something of a counter cultural icon. No marking to text/interior, solid reading copy, small, old paperback book size, cute, pink cover. Worn cover with tears at bottom of spine. Age-toned pages.

réf. 2539London: printed by Elizabeth Sadleir in School-House-Lane; for Patrick Dugan Bookseller on Cork-Hill 1719. Hardcover. Good. . Octavo. 36pp. A8 B4-C4 D2. Third edition. Wrappers. ESTC T136523. A parody of Robinson Crusoe published the same year as that work Gildon's pamphlet contains a vitriolic attack on Defoe and his book. No love was lost between the two men who had a long-standing mutual animus: Defoe had attacked him as a rakehell and Gildon disliked Defoe's politics. Gildon was fundamentally a hack who was prosecuted for seditious libel a few years prior to this work although he avoided prison and pillory. Kate Loveman's Reading Fictions 1660-1740 contains an interesting analysis of this work noting how its critique ironically reflects both Defoe's own methods of criticism and the modes and mores of the coffee-houses. Three copies in the UK and two in North America. 0 London: printed by Elizabeth Sadleir in School-House-Lane; for Patrick Dugan, Bookseller on Cork-Hill, 1719. hardcover
1997Paperclip indent to first 2 pages. Else book is fine. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; The Satyricon of Petronius, a comic novel written in the first century A. D. , is famous today primarily for its amazing banquet tale, "Trimalchio's Feast." But this episode is only one part of the larger picture of life during Nero's rule presented in the work. In this accessible discussion of Petronius's masterful use of parody, Gian Biagio Conte offers an interpretation of the Satyricon as a whole. He combines the scholarly precision of close reading with a significant, original theoretical model. At the heart of his interpretation, Conte reveals the technique of the "hidden author" that Petronius employs at the expense of his characters, in particular the teller of the story, Enclopius. By remaining hidden outside the narrative, Petronius invites the reader to smile at the folies de grandeur that occur in a culture of scholars and declaimers. Yet as Conte shows, behind the parody and inexhaustible humor of the Satyricon lies an unexpectedly serious lament. For those familiar with the Satyricon, as well as for new readers, Conte's book will be a reliable, enjoyable guide to the wonders the Satyricon contains. ; Sather Classical Lectures 60; 224 pages

A delightfully macabre work originally assumed to be by Matthew Gregory "Monk" Lewis but now assumed to be a parody.
