Between scholarly works on the history of Paris and the many unoriginal publications for the general public there was a place for a book where the information was as solid as the iconography. To show and understand how over the centuries Paris was built transformed the social political literary and artistic framework and unfolded the destiny of a capital that became an international myth: such is the purpose of this work. Throughout the contents which unfolds chronologically the authors bring to life the various periods covered. Sociologists academics historians curators each of them approaches their text in an original way. We see ancient Lutetia developing on the banks of a river that very early conditioned its topography: the City the island seat of civil and religious power the University intellectual center of the left bank and the City artisanal and commercial center of the right bank. The modern city desired by Henri IV the city of Reason that became more beautiful during the 18th century the metamorphosed city of Baron Haussmann the city of major works of the late 20th and early 21st centuries all these cities overlap mingle and replace each other tirelessly creating the fascinating landscape of a unique city. A sumptuous iconography selected with relevance and texts as varied as they are informed allow this work to take on a dual character documentary and aesthetic offering both a historical study and an artistic panorama of exceptional richness.
