Il barone Fleury de Chaboulon repubblicano volontario sedicenne nella Guardia Nazionale e decorato della Campagna di Francia fu uomo politico di provata fede bonapartista: nel 1815 raggiunse Napoleone all’Elba e ne divenne Segretario Particolare; costretto all’esilio dopo Waterloo si rifugiò a Londra dove pubblicò queste memorie dapprima per John Murray 1819 e subito dopo in questa edizione stampata per Longman Hurst da A. Strahan. Dettagliatissime e ricche di notizie tanto politiche quanto private sull’imperatore e i suoi contemporanei queste memorie furono lette a Sant’Elena da Napoleone che trovandole troppo rivelatrici censurò e annotò diffusamente la propria copia. «Ces mémoires sont une source importante pour l’histoire du retour de l’Ile d’Elbe et des Cent-Jours et décrivent abondamment les intrigues autour de l’Empereur notanment celles de Fouché» Bertier de Sauvigny - Fierro Bibliographie critique des mémoires sur la Restauration écrits ou traduits en français 414.
