1972Spine slightly sunned. Very minor shelfwear. ; 280 pages; Professor Dover's book is designed for those who are interested in the history of comedy as an art form but who are not necessarily familiar with the Greek language. The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are treated as representative of a genre. Old Attic Comedy, which was artistically and intellectually homogeneous and gave expression to the spirit of Athenian society in the late fifth and early fourth centuries B. C. Aristophanes is regarded primarily not as a reformer or propagandist but as a dramatist who sought, in competition with his rivals, to win the esteem both of the general public and of the cultivated and critical minority. He succeeded in this effort by making people laugh, and the book pays more attention than has generally been paid to the technical means, whether of language or of situation, on which Aristophanes' humor depends. Particular emphasis is laid on his indifference-positively assisted by the physical limitations of the Greek theatre and the conditions of the Athenian dramatic festivals-to the maintenance of continuous "dramatic illusion" or to the provision of a dramatic event with the antecedents and consequences which might logically be expected. More importance is attached to Aristophanes' adoption of popular attitudes and beliefs, to his creation of uninhibited characters with which the spectators could identify themselves, and to his acceptance of the comic poet's traditional role as a mordant but jocular critic of morals, than to any identifiable and consistent elements in his political standpoint.

1994Spine is sunned and discolored. Else very light shelfwear. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 168 pages; This book opens a neglected chapter in the reception of Athenian drama, especially comedy, and gives center stage to a particularly attractive and entertaining series of vase-paintings which have generally been regarded as marginal curiosities. These are the so-called "phylax vases," nearly all painted in Greek cities of South Italy in the period 400 to 360 B. C. Until now, they have been taken to reflect a sort of local folk-theater, but Taplin argues that most, if not all, reflect Athenian comedy of the sort represented by Aristophanes. His bold thesis brings up questions about the relation of tragedy as well as comedy to vase painting, the cultural climate of the Greek cities in Italy, and the extent to which Athenians were aware of drama as a potential "export." It also enriches appreciation of many key aspects of Aristophanic comedy. The book has assembled 47 photographs of vase-paintings, many printed here for the first time outside specialist publications not readily accessible.
1927Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has Some tears and chipping to DJ. DJ is price-clipped. DJ is browned. ; Original 1927 Edition ; 346 pages; One of the major scholars of the 1920s and 30s concerned with the origins of Greek drama, Sir Arthur Pickard-Cambridge focused in particular on the evidence derived from archaeological finds and papyri. He describes this history of the earliest stages of Greek drama as "a dispassionate attempt to ascertain historical truth or probability by methods as logical as the subject permits. "The study begins by bringing together what was known of the dithyramb, and argues against Aristotle's statement that tragedy originated from the leaders of the dithyramb, and against the theory put forward by Sir William Ridgeway that it originated in performances at the tombs of dead heroes.

1992Shelfwear. 1 corner of wraps creased. ; Statues of the god Priapus stood in Roman gardens to warn potential thieves that the god would rape them if they attempted to steal from him. In this book, Richlin argues that the attitude of sexual aggressiveness in defense of a bounded area serves as a model for Roman satire from Lucilius to Juvenal. Using literary, anthropological, psychological, and feminist methodologies, she suggests that aggressive sexual humor reinforces aggressive behavior on both the individual and societal levels, and that Roman satire provides an insight into Roman culture. Including a substantial and provocative new introduction, this revised edition is important not only as an in-depth study of Roman sexual satire, but also as a commentary on the effects of all humor on society and its victims. ; 352 pages
