Littlewood approaches Seneca's tragedies as Neronian literature rather than as reworkings of Attic drama, and emphasizes their place in the Roman world and in the Latin literary corpus. The Greek tragic myths are for Seneca mediated by non-dramatic Augustan literature. In literary terms Phaedra's desire, Hippolytus' innocence, and Hercules' ambivalent heroism look back through allusion to Roman elegy, pastoral, and epic respectively. Ethically, the artificiality of Senecan tragedy, the consciousness that its own dramatic worlds, events, and people are literary constructs, responds to the contemporary Stoical dismissal of the public world as mere theatre. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 344 pages; Signed by Author

Patrick Henry Pearse (also known as Padraig Anrai Mac Piarais) [1879-1916] was an Irish teacher, barrister, poet, writer, nationalist and political activist who was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916. He was declared "President of the Provisional Government" of the Irish Republic in one of the bulletins issued by the Rising's leaders, a status that was however disputed by others associated with the rebellion, both then and subsequently. Following the collapse of the Rising and the execution of Pearse, along with his brother (Willie Pearse) and fourteen other leaders, Pearse came to be seen by many as the embodiment of the rebellion. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! 1927Three volumes. pp. 167; 192; 183. Frontis and titles engraved by Bicknell. Large 8vo.Original vellum backed boards. Top edge gold. Limited to only 400 copies. Engraved Ex Libris of Truman H. Newberry. Fine English text edition issued by the Bibliophile Society The owner of this set Truman H. Newberry was a Secretary of the Navy under Theodore Roosevelt. He was elected to the Senate in 1918. On Mar ch 20, 1920, Newberry was convicted on charges of spending $3,750 to secure his Senate election (quite amazing, considering modern ideas about expenditures to secure political office). The U.S. Supreme Court overturned this decision (May 2, 1921) on the grounds that the U.S. Senate exceeded its powers in attempting to regulate primary elections. By a vote of 46 to 41 (January 12, 1922), the Senate declared Newberry to have been duly elected in 1918. On November 18, two days before the start of the 3rd session of the 67th Congress, Newberry resigned as certain members resumed their efforts to unseat him. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W118
