1992réf. 30640Oxford: Oxford University Press / at the Clarendon Press. New in New dust jacket. 1st Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Volume Two only Edition musical scores. Publisher's full black cloth gilt lettering on spines and covers. This important work proposes a reinterpretation of two major repertories of twelfth-century polyphony: that associated with the long-destroyed abbey of Saint Martial de Limoges and the manuscript preserved in the Cathedral Archive of Santiago de Compostela. Together these comprise the most important collection of polyphonic music before the School of Notre Dame. The absence of contemporary rules for harmony rhythm and notation in this music has led to disagreement among modern scholars as to how this music should be transcribed. Professor Karp's commentary and edition represent a new approach to matters of syllable-change mensuration and notation which are likely to be controversial but which are scrupulously and convincingly defended. The transcriptions themselves have been welcomed by performing musicians to whom an important repertory has been made readily available. Professor Karp was Professor of Music History at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois. The volume is in perfect pristine condition unmarked unread tight square and clean. AS NEW.
