Stead's edition of Aesop alongside a bibliography on Stead scarce works presented together in a clamshell. A curated three volume set of scarce works containing two copies of the first edition of 'Books For the Bairns. I. Held together in a custom paper clamshell which is in a very good condition.Aesop's 'Fables' was the first volume in Stead's popular series 'Books for the Bairns' which published fairy tales and works of classical literature for children.Sally Wood's volume offers a bibliography of Stead's works as well as a brief biography on him.Aesop's Fables is a selection of fables generally attributed to the Ancient Greek storyteller Aesop who lived around 620 BCE-564 BCE. The fables are moral tales that guide in religious and secular aspects of life following adventures of many different creatures. All three works are illustrated in-text throughout. The new series of Aesop's 'Fables' is illustrated by Brinsley le Fanu.W. T. Stead was a newspaper editor and a pioneer of investigative journalism. He died in 1912 in the sinking of the Titanic. This set was curated by Eric Sweet with his bookplate to the front paste down of the cloth bound first edition. Sweet was a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style. Two volumes are in the original publisher's wraps and one is rebound in cloth by Eric Sweet together in a custom paper clamshell. Externally smart. The paperback issue of 'Books for the Bairns' is little worn and age-toned with light edge wear and a repair to the spine and tail of the rear wrap. Minor handling marks to the wraps and a rubbed out pencil inscription to the head of the front wrap. A couple of marks to the cloth of the rebound 'Books for Bairns'. 'W. T. Stead and His "Books For the Bairns"' is smart a little sunned to the wraps with a few light handling marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with scattered spots 'W. T. Stead and His "Books For the Bairns"' is bright and clean. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page of the paperback 'Books for the Bairns' and to the head of the front wrap of the rebound 'Books for the Bairns'. "Reprinted at Leipzig the offered item in a very handsome and more copious manner in the following year 1810. This beautiful and elaborate editions presents us with the Fables of Æsop before they had been corrupted as is supposd by their first editor Planudes. The text is taken from a celebrated and very ancient MS preserved at Florence in the Library of the Cassini Monks; written in a different style and greatly departing from the received text. This appears to be upon the whole the very best edition of Æsop extant." Dibdin I p. 252. hardcover
