TRAM under the direction of Mikhail Sokolovsky was a working theater for proletarian youth focused on producing plays of working-class life promoting Marxist ideology. Also illustrated are scenes from past productions - A.I. Piotrovsky's "Rule Britannia;" a performance by Ivan Dzerzhinsky's music and dance ensemble "Green Workshop" and two others. A rare program; very little primary material relating to TRAM has appeared in the marketplace and the current program does not appear to be held by any OCLC member institution. "What is needed in order to insure that we do not witness another protest followed by an execution - as in the cases of Sacco-Vanzetti the Rosenbergs et al. - is for the movement to immediately establish in New Haven a center which would become a magnet to draw thousands upon thousands of people from all over the country. By their overwhelming presence they could exert great power and influence in New Haven to see that this outrageous frameup is ended - NOW!" First Edition. 12mo 15cm.; publisher's blue printed staplebound card wrappers; 84pp. Wrappers a bit toned else Very Good or better. The Service masquerading as a private enterprise whose aim was to send democracy- and capitalism-loving American youth to the communist-run Festival was funded by an anonymous donor later revealed to be the CIA though Steinem would have been aware of this from the start. The present pamphlet was issued a month before the Festival began and provides a detailed critique of the quality of Soviet literature: "The trouble with Soviet literature as Ilya Ehrenburg sees it is that Soviet writers say things they do not believe" p. 5. 1933ref. BK0122New York City 1933. 12mo in red leather with debossed details on the front cover. 36 pages filled out totaling appx. 2400 words. Cover quite scuffed with wear especially at corners good. Some pages wrinkled else excellent. A brief diary belonging to Helene Karger Weiss 1918-2014 of New York City written between 1931 and 1933 when Weiss was about thirteen to fifteen years old with most entries from 1931. Her father Leopold Weiss immigrated from Hungary in 1904 and her maternal grandfather Henry Kargher from Germany in 1850; these and other details such as the names of friends in her social circle and an Upper West Side address suggest that Weiss's family was Jewish. Weiss was writing from the midst of the Great Depression and interwar period but her adolescent worries are well recognizable to us today; for instance she writes: "Dad started the morning off with calling me a crazy Nut! I guess I'm getting used to it. I could cry when I think how nice and lovely they treated me before Grandma went away. Of course they have to feed me and clothe me because they're my parents and if they call that love -! But I don't. I want some one to love Love LOVE me! Oh dear! I'm going to Elsies to meet some boys. But they just needed an extra. Thats all I'm supposed to be I suppose." January 2 1931 She tells her diary she had been "shrieked at from morning till night and all over nothing" because her father said "I wanted to 'stuff myself with ice cream'" January 5 and reports on her failing grades: "I failed in Geography! with a 64! I pretended to have a headache when I came home from school so that maybe Mother wouldn't yell. - But oh! yes she did - I'll say -! - And I know I've failed History - and Eng. and Arith. which we have tommorrow Just spelling I think I've passed. Oh God! Maybe you will think of a way to talk to them! I wish I was never born!!!! Oh well!" January 6 Weiss's strong spirit-her obituary describes her as having "lived life on her own terms"1-is charmingly familiar and is coming into conflict with figures of authority in her life as she grows into young adulthood. She is also discovering the thrills of romantic attention: "I went out with some boys today with Elsie. I did like one and tried to show it. He touched my arm in the movie they took us to see 'Lightnin'' once or twice and I quite thrilled touched him back but he merely looked at me. And Now I love him. His name is Arthur something. Oh well!" January 3 Weiss records going out to movies and shows with her girlfriends her test results she does manage to pass her classes and taking an IQ test then fairly new at school: "Nothing doing in School today. All teachers busy going 'woozy' correcting I.Q.'s intelligent tests. Scold! Scold! SCOLD! Morn to night irregardless." January 9 She stops filling out the diary for a while after January 1931 returning with tragic news of her dear friend Elsie: "Elsie died from her heart trouble and I mourn her. Now I realize how much I miss her what an empty place she leaves in my heart I think I love her better than dad & mom. She looked beautiful. She was. I went to camp with her last year. Poor brave little thing. She never got her low-backed evening dress with silver slippers God rest her soul." May 26 1932 Remarkably different in tone from the other entries Weiss's description of her grief over Elsie's death is in a way a record of the importance of the friendship between the two young girls. The final entry connects this grief back to Weiss's struggles at home: "Of course its been hellish at home. God-Damn it I wish I could run away. Elsie died since I wrote in here last. I really don't know what to do. We can't get along and they just can't realize the fact. Wish to hell I was 18. They have never been so cranky as they are now. Disgusting." February 22 1933 Written nearly 100 years ago but as familiar as if it were written yesterday Weiss's diary finds her negotiating parental and educational authority friendship and the beginnings of a romantic life and bereavement. Of interest to those researching youth culture in interwar New York City especially that of girls and young women. 1 "Helene W.
