1969réf. 55917New York: Vantage Press 1969. First edition. Very good plus in a very good jacket. Garrulously inscribed first edition of this scarce self-published first-person account of life on the road with the Chicago Outlaws. Unassuming factory worker George "Rock Conte" Mitchell falls in with the notorious Chicago Outlaws seemingly out of nothing but curiosity: "I had never met or encountered anything which split my imagination as this group did." He published this account with Vantage Press at his own expense reporting credulously and forgivingly on the gang "many of the stunts they pulled off just didn't seem to make any sense . I had seen only one member smoke marijuana" some of whom were also seen and heard from in Danny Lyon's THE BIKERIDERS. Inscribing the book six years after publication Conte echoes the also presumably self-penned jacket copy in comparing his mission to that of John Howard Griffin in BLACK LIKE ME but OUTLAWS FOREVER brought no publicity to the divide between the straight world and that of the riders. Perhaps because HELL'S ANGELS had already claimed it all for Hunter S. Thompson several years before. OCLC locates just six scattered holdings. 8'' x 5.5''. Original black cloth boards silver stamped spine. In original unclipped $4.50 pictorial jacket. 8 pages of black-and-white photographs. 216 pages. Inscribed to front free endpaper: "To / Rob & Sue: / I feel like 'John / Howard Griffin' author of / 'Black Like Me'. There is / always another side to a story. / Sometimes one may pay a / dear price & suffer but one / should never give up. / I wish the two of you the best of everything and hope / your dearest dreams come true. / Sincerely Your friend / Always / Rock Conte / 5-24th-75." Jacket lightly toned with minor soil and few small chips. Faint toning to text block. Bit of pushing to spine tail. Overall sound and clean. Vantage Press unknown

1912réf. 5917Havana 1912. Good plus. 196pp. Original printed front wrapper bound into 20th-century faux leather paper boards spine and front board gilt lettered. Contemporary ownership inscription and bookseller's ink stamp on title page. Lower corners of initial and final leaves repaired with tissue. Even tanning occasional foxing heavier to initial leaves. A scarce contemporary account of what the authors term the "Guerra de Razas" also known as the 1912 Cuban War an uprising by parts of the island's Afro-Cuban population demanding equal rights which was brutally extinguished by government forces. The conflict had its roots in racial tensions between Cuba's Hispanic and Black populations after the reestablishment of self-government in 1909. Race-based political parties such as the Partido Independiente de Color had been established in the 1900s to fight for the civil rights of Black Cubans but these groups were outlawed by the predominantly Hispanic government in 1910. The PIC continued to operate however and its leaders Evaristo Esteñoz and Pedro Ivonet agitated for a rebellion that would force the government to reverse the law. When the uprising finally occurred in the eastern provinces of Cuba on May 20 1912 it was met with extreme force with contemporary accounts and eyewitnesses numbering the executed and massacred at anywhere between 2000 and 6000 people including Esteñoz and Ivonet. The authors of the present work present their account from a pro-government perspective but nevertheless make some attempt toward social history and analysis of the causes of conflict. The whole is photographically illustrated with numerous portraits of significant military figures. OCLC locates a small handful of copies in U.S. institutions. unknown books
