1911ref. 0109062Cambridge UK: Cambridge University Press 1911. 11th edition. Leather Bound. maps colored b&w illusts. 4to. 29 volumes bound in chocolate brown suede. All volumes are stamped in gilt with the title edition and volume designation as well as the crest of the University Press at Cambridge. All page edges gilt silk-sewn endpapers of supple calf. Each of the volumes contains perhaps 1000 pages which being printed on onionskin paper result in a thickness per volume hardly exceeding one inch. Most volumes are in very good condition some appearing unread but as can be expected a few volumes show wear to the binding including "thumbed" corners creases to spines rubbing to rear covers -- and five volumes show chips at spine ends the worst being Vol II which shows a 1 x 0.75" chip at spine head. Contents show occasional creasing and/or short tears at edges. The custom made solid wood bookcase which has a shelf for each book measures 51' x 15' x 11'. It shows scratches and scuffs and a few chips but is square and sturdy. The 'thin paper edition' of the Eleventh printed on 'onionskin' paper complete with the magnificent mahogany tiered standing bookcase. This the most famous of all encyclopedias in the English language was sponsored by a 'Society of Gentlemen in Scotland' Printing and the Mind of Man and was first published in three volumes in 1771. This is perhaps the most desirable edition of this encyclopedia and was the last to contain signed extensive articles on the major areas of human knowledge and endeavour. 'It is noteworthy for its index which has justly been described as the best index of any work of reference'. P&TMOM. Cambridge University Press unknown

Modern bookplate to front pastedowns. A scarce reference work the first division - covering mathematics and games - of the enormous and unwieldy Encyclopédie méthodique par ordre des matières initiated by Charles Panckoucke in an attempt to update and expand Diderot’s Encyclopédie. Originally intended to cover 26 parts it would update the original Encyclopédie while also rearranging its articles by subject instead of the random grouping of alphabetical order. Work began in 1782 and finished fifty years later 45 years later than intended with somewhere around 150-200 volumes depending on how the parts were gathered having been produced. Few subscribers will have survived five decades and the French Revolution and compete sets are practically and philosophically almost unimaginable. Even the individual divisions are scarce: this Mathematics division was one of the first completed but rarely appears on the market. The small division of ‘Games’ was issued with the third volume of Mathematics with its own set of plates. Hôtel de Thou [vol. 3 & 4 Chez Panckoucke] unknown

The Encyclopedia a monumental work edited by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert was a groundbreaking endeavour that aimed to systematically catalogue all human knowledge spanning 28 volumes published between 1751 and 1772. As a product of the Enlightenment era the Encyclopedia embodies the spirit of rational inquiry intellectual exchange and the scientific method as its contributors known as encyclopedists sought to understand the world through reason and empirical evidence. The editors Diderot and d'Alembert defined their goal : "As an Encyclopedia it is to define as well as possible the order and structure of human knowledge. As a Reasoned Dictionary of the Sciences Arts and Trades it is to contain the general principles that form the basis of each science and each art liberal or mechanical and the most essential facts that make up the body and substance of each". The emphasis on arts and trades during the Enlightenment period shifted the focus from the refined pursuits of the aristocracy to the everyday accomplishments of working people. This movement celebrated the skills and crafts of artisans farmers and other labourers recognising their importance in society and the value of their contributions to the economy. By highlighting the applied arts and crafts the Encyclopedia promoted a more egalitarian view of society where all individuals regardless of social class had a vital role to play in shaping culture and society.
