The Britannica was first published between December 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh as the Encyclopaedia Britannica or A Dictionary of Arts and Sciences compiled upon a New Plan. In part it was conceived in reaction to the French Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert published 1751-1772 which had been inspired by Chambers's Cyclopaedia first edition 1728. It went on sale 10 December. The Britannica of this period was primarily a Scottish enterprise and it is one of the most enduring legacies of the Scottish Enlightenment. In this era the Britannica moved from being a three-volume set 1st edition compiled by one young editor-William Smellie-to a 20-volume set written by numerous authorities Heavy set may require extra shipping costs hardcover

1902rif. C69694London: Adam & Charles Black 1902. Tenth Edition. Hardback Hardcover. Very Good. Tenth Edition Dimensions:290mm H x 240W x 75Dmm.pp.909. Curiosity and intrigue hidden within Vol. 31 MOS.-PRE. On page 217 'New York City' a 'secret safe' cache livre lined with green felt houses a replica or vintage toy hand-gun and two pieces of lead shot. A hand-written note is attached to the underside of the 'safe' lid: ""A rare gun to commemorate the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and the Prince of Wales."" The note is in the hand of Peter O'Toole and the item was purchased from the estate of the film director Brian Forbes. O'Toole was known for such jokes and the item was probably an end of play or film gift possibly making fun of Brian Forbes close associations with Royals. The gun appears to be an antique is heavily-made with a slightly worn coating of black paint. The cylinder is the only moving part; the trigger is missing. The secret compartment has a home-made quality; roughly cut from the pages 217 to 668. The note appears to be a later addition. The book is a genuine encyclopaedia: The seventh of the 'New' volumes being Volume XXX1 of the Complete Work: 'The New Volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica constituting in Combination with the Existing Volumes of the Ninth Edition The Tenth Edition of That Work and also Supplying a New Distinctiveand Independent Library of Reference Dealing with Recent Events and Developments' Very good. The Encyclopedia a monumental work edited by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert was a groundbreaking endeavour that aimed to systematically catalogue all human knowledge spanning 28 volumes published between 1751 and 1772. As a product of the Enlightenment era the Encyclopedia embodies the spirit of rational inquiry intellectual exchange and the scientific method as its contributors known as encyclopedists sought to understand the world through reason and empirical evidence. The editors Diderot and d'Alembert defined their goal : "As an Encyclopedia it is to define as well as possible the order and structure of human knowledge. As a Reasoned Dictionary of the Sciences Arts and Trades it is to contain the general principles that form the basis of each science and each art liberal or mechanical and the most essential facts that make up the body and substance of each". The emphasis on arts and trades during the Enlightenment period shifted the focus from the refined pursuits of the aristocracy to the everyday accomplishments of working people. This movement celebrated the skills and crafts of artisans farmers and other labourers recognising their importance in society and the value of their contributions to the economy. By highlighting the applied arts and crafts the Encyclopedia promoted a more egalitarian view of society where all individuals regardless of social class had a vital role to play in shaping culture and society.
