1945Best.-Nr. 190746London: Director-General of Army Education 1945. First edition of this primer for British servicemen posted to North Africa and the Middle East. Lessons centre on the story of two soldiers called Bill and John interspersing linguistic content with cultural notes. The pronunciation and dialect follow Egyptian usage although Syrian and Iraqi alternatives are sometimes discussed. The content suggests that the anonymous compiler relied on earlier British publications including naval intelligence handbooks issued during the First World War. Octavo. Map in text. Text in English and romanized Arabic. Original blue card wrappers wire-stitched as issued front cover lettered in black. A few annotations in text. Wrappers lightly marked and toned: very good. unknown
1967Best.-Nr. 196308No stated place or publisher: 1967. First edition introducing vocabulary for topics ranging from food and drink greetings and personal details to specialised military terms like "rocket launcher" and "Trucial Oman Scouts". We have traced no other copies in institutions or commerce. The phrasebook opens with encouragement: "The Arab regards his language as the greatest in the world. So when he hears someone trying to speak his language he is delighted. You will find your efforts to speak Arabic get a very warm response" p. 1. There are also a number of "Do's and Don'ts" such as do not be discouraged when you do not understand anything and do not point the soles of your feet at anyone. Alongside individual words the book also introduces phrases like "I'd like a cup of coffee please" "Is there a well near here" and "I am a soldier". In 1967 after the British withdrawal from Aden Middle East Command was renamed HQ British Forces Gulf and relocated to Bahrain. The distinction between Bahraini and Trucial Omani vocabulary for example "village" as qarya or balad respectively and the inclusion of regional variants for example fee ammaan Illah for "Goodbye" suggest that it was issued to the Trucial Oman Scouts. Landscape duodecimo. With 7 pp. of note paper at rear as issued. Original yellow paper wrappers wire-stitched as issued front wrapper lettered in black rear wrapper with printer's slug in black. Wrappers a little soiled at edges and spine rear wrapper with strong vertical crease contents clean: a very good copy. unknown

1947Best.-Nr. 184799London: Geographical Section General Staff 1947. Arabic and military cartography Rare first and only edition of this Arabic glossary for use on foreign maps produced by the British War Office. It explains the use of Arabic terms on maps covering territories to the east of the Libyan-Egyptian border and was part of an extensive series published in the 1940s. The spelling and transliteration follow the RGS II System conventions devised by the Royal Geographical Society's Permanent Committee on Geographical Names in 1921 updating those used by the War Office and Admiralty after 1885. The introduction includes a survey of the history of the Arabic language its alphabet pronunciation and dialects in view of instructing soldiers pilots and surveyors on how to read and pronounce names on maps of the Middle East. "An Arabic word may appear on European maps in numerous transliterated forms each depending upon the national authority of the map and the principle of transliteration applied to the names on it" p. 2 due to the "considerable play" between a e and i and other such alternative renditions of specific letters and sounds. The four-column table provides abbreviations transliteration the Arabic-script version and the meaning of Arabic words commonly found on maps. For instance aqra' is rendered as "without vegetation" ashqar as "reddish" ghurd as "sand dune" and zallaq as "slippery place" specifying if a noun is a plural and/or in a different grammatical case. Words originating from other languages Berber Hebrew Greek Latin Turkish and Persian are also identified. Octavo 270 x 185 mm. pp. 28 2. Text in Arabic and English. Original printed brown paper wrappers three punch holes.
