1863réf. 92359London: Samuel Bagster 1863. Hardcover. Very Good. viii 118p. Original cloth. Titled in gilt on front cover. 16 cm. Modest fading on backstrip and around edges of front cover. Library stamping on front free endpaper indicating that this was owned and discarded by Redemptorist Communities in Ireland. Arabic text with Introduction in English. Ferrette identified on the title page as a missionary of the irish Presbyterian Church at Damascus believed that he had come up with a great typographic method for dealing with the vowel problem in Arabic type. Ferrette's suggested fix did not catch on and his suggested fix is now mostly forgotten. Most copies located by OCLC list W. M. Watts as publisher and are dated 1863 on the title-page. This copy with the same pagination lists Bagster as publisher and is undated. We suspect that Bagster persuaded the publisher or Ferrette to issue some copies with Bagster's name as publisher for sale in Bagster's theological bookstore. We doubt that it is a later or second edition. OCLC locates one copy Huntington with the Bagster imprint. It is dated as 1836 which seems likely to be an error in dating caused by transposing the last two numbers. Samuel Bagster hardcover books

1830réf. ABC_483971830. Contemporary navy blue morocco with the title lettered in gold on spine marbled endpapers. 4to 21.5 x 27 cm. With 2 folding tables 17 lines to the page written in red and black ink. A unique handwritten vocabulary and phrasebook of English and Arabic from the first half of the 19th century. This meticulously prepared manuscript is written in the fashion of a printed book opening with a title page and ending with an index of topics. It is divided into four main sections: nouns adjectives verbs and example sentences. The vocabulary especially in the nouns section is arranged by subjects which include such interesting headings as "Druggist" "Painter" "Merchant" "Cities" "the Bride's Paraphernalia" "Precious Jewels" "War" "The Church" "Clerical Vestments" "Ecclesiastical Degrees & Kinds of Sin" "Festivals" and "Monks their prayers and their dress". Presumably the dictionary was created to help a traveller or merchant who may have had an association with the Church. The final section offers an interesting selection of phrases and sheds some light on the experience of foreign language learning in the early 19th century. The phrases are a mixture of sentences that would be useful in daily life and such as would be included to practice the words from the vocabulary. Examples include: "We roasted a lamb and ate the whole of it and drank wine with it"; "I descended from above with the youth my enemy"; "I shot the bear in the water and he sank"; and "Why dost thou scratch thy head and spit in fire". As a cheat sheet for Arabic grammar the author includes two folding tables of Arabic verb tenses and conjugations. Overall a curious example of a 19th-century Arabic vocabulary and phrasebook. With a presentation note in English indicating it was a Christmas gift in 1881 presented by G. W. Bernard Esq. Binding and spine worn some browning and staining throughout. Otherwise in good condition. unknown

In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Dd created an exhibition "The Nobels and Baku Oil" that was displayed at the Baku Museum Centre. The exhibition was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Contract of the Century and the 130 years since the Nobel Brothers opened their business in Baku. It told the story of the Nobel Company's accomplishments in Azerbaijan from 1874 to 1920 and its role in the economic, technological and social development of the region. The Nobel brothers - Alfred, Ludvig and Robert - once had with Baku. In fact, when the Nobel Prizes were established more than a century ago (1901), roughly 12 percent of the prize money was drawn from Alfred's shares in the Nobel Brothers' Petroleum Company in Baku. The Petroleum Production Company Nobel Brothers, Limited, or Branobel ("Nobel Brothers" in Russian), was an oil company set up by Ludvig Nobel and Baron Peter von Bilderling. It operated mainly in Baku, Azerbaijan, but also in Cheleken, Turkmenistan. Originally established by Robert Nobel (who contributed 25,000 rubles) and the investments of barons Peter von Bilderling (300,000 rubles) and Standertskjöld (150,000 rubles) as a distillery in 1876, it became, during the late-19th century, one of the largest oil-companies in the world. The Nobel Brothers Petroleum Company was an oil-producing company that had its origins in a distillery, founded by Robert and Ludvig Nobel in Baku in 1876, which, in 1879, turned into a shareholding company headquartered in St. Petersburg. The share capital of three million rubles was divided as follows: 53,7% Ludwig Nobel, 31,0% Baron Peter von Bilderling, 4,7% I.J. Zabelskiv, 3,8% Alfred Nobel, 3,3% Robert Nobel, 1,7% au Baron Alexandre von Bilderling. Pipeline transport was pioneered near Baku by Vladimir Shukhov and the Branobel company in 1878-1880. On 10 April 1902, the company signed a contract for the purchase of oil fields in Romany, which were owned by the oil producer Isabey Hajinsky. On 17 October 1905, in accordance with the Committee of Ministers, the company purchased the oil fields owned by oil producer A. Adamov. The company's fixed capital in 1914-1917 was 30 million rubles. By 1916, it was the largest oil company in Russia, producing 76 million poods of oil. Between 1877 and 1901, the company drilled over 500 wells, produced 150 million barrels of oil, and employed 12,000 workers.

1981Very Good English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 243, [4] p., maps. The Shatt Al-Arab dispute: A legal study. This is a historical, political and legal study of the Shan al-Arab dispute between the government of Iran and the Republic of Iraq, a dispute which has not received the international attention it deserves, while it is a perpetual threat to peace in this area of the Middle East. The Iranian government claims that the Shaft al- Arab is a border ever between the two states and, being a navigable river, it should be divided between Iraq and Iran according to the Thalweg line. This claim has always been unacceptable to Iraq, and not in accordance its the historical facts. Dr Khalid al- Izzi has attempted to study this dispute as objectively s possible, relying upon Iraqi as well as Iranian sources. As a lawyer, the author hopes that his work may help in solving this dis-ute which has for so long marred relations between these two Islamic countries. Those who are interested in the study of Arab- Persian relations will !so find this book useful and stimulating. Mainly contents: Part I. History of the Conflict: 1.
